Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool meets Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in a new piece of X-Men crossover art. It’s no secret that Reynolds has been pushing for his beloved, foul-mouthed character to crossover with Jackman's mutant hero since 2016’s Deadpool. While Deadpool and Wolverine have history in Marvel Comics, the pair have only appeared onscreen together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which did not do the character of Wade Wilson justice (to say the least). Jackman and Reynolds have been inextricably tied since that film, frequently taking playful shots at one another on social media or in the Deadpool franchise.

After playing Wolverine eight times, Jackman essentially became the face of Fox’s X-Men franchise. In 2017’s R-rated Logan, Jackman gave Weapon X a faithful send-off thanks in part to the success of Deadpool, which paved the way for many mainstream R-rated comic book movies. That being said, many Marvel fans were disappointed that Jackman bowed out just as the idea of Logan and Wade trading F-bombs seemed plausible. Unfortunately, Jackman has been adamant that he won't do such a project irrespective of Disney/Marvel Studios’ acquisition of Fox, which makes it possible for characters like Wolverine and Deadpool to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Digital artist César recently shared some art on Instagram imagining a variety of iconic character crossovers. They included mash-ups from Harley Quinn and Cruella, to Back to the Future and Loki. Some of these crossover images see Jackman’s Wolverine meet Reynolds’ Deadpool à la X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and Logan. Despite Jackman seemingly hanging his claws up for good, the fandom continues to anticipate the MCU’s implementation of X-Men mutants and the Fantastic Four. Reynolds recently made his “MCU debut” alongside Korg in a promotional video for Free Guy. Marvel Studios is moving forward with its first R-rated movie, Deadpool 3, presumably capitalizing on the character’s meta nature to negate continuity issues. That being said, the MCU’s exploration of the multiverse concept via Loki, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ultimately makes it possible for Deadpool to appear anywhere and at any time.

In Phase 4 of the MCU, Disney+’s Loki and What If…? have introduced concepts like alternate timelines and variants. No Way Home is already applying these concepts by bringing back villains from past Sony franchises, including Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx’s Electro. Their respective Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, are also heavily rumored to be appearing. Reynolds no doubt sees the narrative potential of all this and has likely been badgering Jackman about, at the very least, an X-Men cameo appearance in Deadpool 3. It’s hard to imagine Kevin Feige and company not allowing the Deadpool/Wolverine crossover everyone wants, given fans would surely flock to see it.
