A Wolverine and Deadpool team up is coming to Marvel Comics’ ongoing Wolverine series, meaning that the body count may be as high as the tension between the two Weapon X alums. Though they have similarities as survivors of clandestine government projects and have been trained as killers, Logan and Wade Wilson’s personalities couldn’t be more different, meaning their interactions produce brutal fights and brutal humor. Wolverine is the stoic warrior who vacillates between either keeping entirely to himself or becoming utterly emotionally invested. Deadpool, on the other hand, is a free spirit who borders on the absurd, shooting his mouth off while also shooting everything else.

Surprisingly, Logan has been more of a team player since taking up residence in Krakoa, feeling a fierce need to defend it in theory and in practice, playing an active role in its protection as a leader of covert operations. As of late, Wolverine is believing Krakoa to be too idyllic, which means he may welcome how Deadpool is about to turn things upside down for Logan and his fellow mutants. Meanwhile, Deadpool, befitting his oddball nature, has been dubbed the King of Monsters after slaying the previous king, and has recently turned Staten Island into his own kingdom called Deadpoolopolis. The construction of Wade Wilson’s monarchy occurred on his own schedule, while the majority of mutantkind was populating and shaping their new island nation.

With both heroes in very different places, what causes Wolverine and Deadpool to cross paths, beginning in Wolverine #20 in April, is part of the fun, hinted writer Benjamin Percy and artist Adam Kubert. In information released by Marvel, Percy said the reluctant superhero team up is “irreverent and hilarious.” The pairing of Wolverine with the Merc with a Mouth will feel inevitable after Deadpool discovers a plot that threatens the mutants’ utopia. Wolverine, who has been leading an understaffed X-Force squad, has no choice but to take all the help he can get, teaming up with the self-healing mutant he finds so obnoxious.

Percy mentioned that the actions of Wolverine will have a huge bearing on what comes next in the X-universe and this plot he unravels with Deadpool is part of this. “Without giving away any spoilers, this is going to be an explosive and complicated year for the mutants,” he said. “You’ll soon learn how the future of Krakoa (and mutantkind) is in peril, and Wolverine will of course be at the center of it all, slashing and hacking away.”

The two will be at each other’s sides (and each other’s throats) starting in April after the culmination of the X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine event. The ramifications of this event, which precedes the Deadpool-Wolverine team up, are said to be huge and Marvel is calling it Logan’s biggest story ever. With their contrast in styles and history with Weapon X, along with the stakes of their mission, the volatile chemistry between Wolverine and Deadpool is certain to be a can't-miss entry in an exciting new era for Logan.
