WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan #3

-

If Deadpool wasn't deadly enough, he sure is now that he's claimed Wolverine's adamantium claws and skeleton. That plot twist might strike some Marvel Comics fans as cause for concern, since the events of Secret Empire made Deadpool a supervillain once more. But fear not, because the limited comic series Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan is a brand of insanity all its own. As evidenced by the end of Issue #3, which makes Wade Wilson the only X-Men character to have the adamantium-coated skeleton and claws of the man called Wolverine. Even if he is the older version of Wolverine, removed from his dead reality decades in the future.

The great news is that Deadpool has claimed them temporarily. At least, we think... to start with, anyway. Deadpool and Old Man Logan have run into some trouble trying to escort a new mutant to freedom. As every fan of Laura Kinney or the recent Logan movie knows, billions of dollars can go into the creation of mutants. The more powerful, the more valuable. And believe it or not, the corporate terrorists who take Wade Wilson and Old Man Logan prisoner weren't looking for them at all.

They were looking for the mutant who put the claws and metal into Deadpool's body. And they definitely didn't act fast enough.fter them at all.

The mutant in question is a teenage girl named Maddie, who made her debut in Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan #1 as a brand new, Omega-Level Marvel Mutant. Soon after Logan and Maddie's paths crossed with Wade, he refused to let someone else play the hero. Needless to say, the pair of Weapon X test subjects made everything more complicated and worse from there. Too much attention was drawn, and the company hunting Maddie - Gen-Form - tracked their whereabouts and captured the girl. Once they tapped into her brain, her true powers began to manifest.

You see, Maddie is able to conjure objects - not in a magical sense, but literally summon/teleport things wherever she pleases from someplace else. So when she regains her mind and finds herself locked up with Deadpool, the Merc With a Mouth has an insane idea.

The issue establishes that Maddie is only able to control objects, not any living things (be they animals, or plants). So when Logan is taken by the guards, eager to do some surprise dissections of 'the Wolverine,' his friends come to the worst kind of rescue imaginable. As Logan writhes in pain on the table, confusing the motionless surgeons, the activity in Deadpool and Maddie's cell explodes. The guard who investigates is silenced quickly, leaving Deadpool to march his way into the lab where Logan is still in agony.

Only when Deadpool enters is it clear Maddie really did it: she teleported the adamantium, claws and all, from Logan's skeleton to Wade's. It's a reveal and gimmick so preposterous and brilliant, even Wade's tragically blown catchphrase can't ruin the moment. The actual battle will need to wait until Issue #4, but for once, Deadool's problem-solving skills turned out to be his most important.

Nobody has ever taken all of the Man out of the Wolverine, but it turns out you CAN take the Wolverine out of the Man.
