Warning: SPOILERS for Deadpool: Assassin #5

A world famous character seen in Deadpool 2 just found out that in Marvel's comic universe, death waits around every corner. Time to pour one out for Weasel, Wade Wilson's best friend and superhero sidekick.

The Deadpool: Assassin series is hurtling towards its finale, as the fifth issue of the six-part comic finds Deadpool taking on the entire Assassins Guild. Along with a little help from allies Weasel and Threnody, he has a plan. But but in Deadpool: Assassin #5, things go horribly wrong.

As the issue begins, Deadpool has split up from his trusty sidekicks and enlisted a small army of other mercenaries to take the fight to the Assassins Guild HQ. The mercs slaughter the lower ranks of assassins with relative ease, and then are taken down themselves before Deadpool faces off against the best of the best.

Elsewhere, Weasel and Threnody are holding out against another contingent of killers, and it looks like they are all going to make it out alive. Of course, this is a comic book universe (and a Deadpool series, at that) meaning something must go wrong. Although Deadpool is able to take down the entire Assassins Guild, and Threnody deals with the ones pursuing her, Weasel, and Weasel's wife... the merc's right hand man is stabbed from behind while trying to keep the assassins at bay.

He's only able to hold out until Deadpool arrives, before dying in his arms. It's a surprisingly touching moment for Wade, made more heartbreaking with the revelation that Weasel's wife was pregnant, and Threnody has kidnapped her for (presumably) nefarious purposes. The final issue of Deadpool: Assassin will undoubtedly see the Merc With A Mouth head out to save his dead friend's wife and unborn child - which should make a fantastic conclusion to the miniseries.

Of course, fans of Ryan Reynold's big screen Deadpool will be familiar with Weasel from the films, where he is portrayed by T J Miller. In the movie universe - just like the primary Marvel comics universe - Weasel is still alive and kicking... but who knows how long that will last. Especially given accusations leveled against T J Miller that led to his abrupt departure from Silicon Valley.

Could this be foreshadowing of Weasel's death before that X-Force movie as well? There's officially no connection between the two, since the versions of the characters are about as different as can be (what with Weasel's wife, and child). But history has proven that comic books can parallel the real world in some uncanny ways. And with Deadpool, nothing is off the table.

Deadpool: Assassin #5 is available now from Marvel Comics.
