A fan poster for Spider-Man: No Way Home sees Deadpool prepare to drop into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, courtesy of an interdimensional portal. Marvel Studios and Sony’s upcoming third entry in the MCU’s Spider-Man franchise follows Peter Parker (Tom Holland) after the web slinger's secret identity is revealed to the world in Spider-Man: Far From Home. As shown in the recent teaser trailer, Peter goes to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help undoing this. Unfortunately, the subsequent spell aimed at wiping memories goes awry and seemingly opens the Multiverse.

As part of Phase 4, Disney+’s Loki introduced concepts like alternate timelines, variants, and Nexus Events. Long before the leak and release of No Way Home’s trailer, rumors circulated that characters from past Sony franchises would appear in the film, thanks to a Multiverse theory similar to the one applied to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The film is confirmed to include villains like Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and should feature (at the very least) cameo appearances by their respective Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. No Way Home will pave the road for a slew of new and familiar characters to become part of the MCU. Not the least of which is Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson/Deadpool/the Merc with a Mouth.

No Way Home is shaping up to be the most anticipated film since Avengers: Endgame. While the latter was the culmination of Marvel Studios’ defining phases, the former represents a potential homage to definitive comic book movies. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002) and Fox’s X-Men franchise had a profound impact on the current state of superhero cinema and hold a special place in fans' hearts. Marvel Studios’ partnership with Sony and acquisition of Fox has not only made it possible for Maguire to return but the Fantastic Four and X-Men as well.

Outside of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Reynolds’ Deadpool is easily the most popular character to come out of Fox’s X-Men universe. Unlike other, more serious mutants, his irreverence and meta nature negate continuity issues. The Deadpool franchise can continue relatively unscathed. For example, Reynolds recently made a tongue-in-cheek MCU debut alongside Korg in a promotional video for his latest movie, Free Guy. His official debut will likely be in Disney/Marvel Studios’ first R-rated film, Deadpool 3. However, it’s easy to imagine Wade Wilson showing up in Spider-Man: No Way Home to make a witty remark about Doctor Strange’s sweatpants. If Kevin Feige and company know what they’re doing (and they do), they should fully utilize Reynolds’ commentary. He may just be the next step.
