When one thinks of the notorious Deadpool, they recall a humorously deranged character who enjoys playful banter and going on wild adventures - such as the time he demolishes Thanos by becoming Captain Universe. Though, one doesn't generally associate the Merc With A Mouth with the word heroism. But in Deadpool Annual #1, even Deadpool discovers he's capable of being a hero.

The reason Deadpool fans hardly associate the word heroism with him is because of all the terrible things he has done over the years. Additionally, Deadpool is well-known for killing the Marvel Universe and when he learned that killing the entire MU is not good enough for him, he attempted to kill the Multiverse of Deadpools in the Deadpool Kills Deadpool comic series. The only time Deadpool ever comes close to achieving heroism is through accidental means such as when Venom possesses Deadpool in Venom/Deadpool What If? #1. And in John Layman, Juan Doe, Fabio D'Auria, and Clayton Cowles comic Deadpool Annual #1 he unknowingly becomes one of Marvel's greatest heroes.

After the Hulk, Spider-Man, and Deadpool become trapped in an alternate universe where Deadpool's counterpart is a supervillain and leader of the New York criminal empire named Death Mask, Deadpool temporarily destroys his counterpart - because Death Mask possesses a healing factor similar to his and steals his identity for a day. But while Deadpool is doodling in Death Mask's arcane spell book's in his office atop Wilson Fisk's Tower, Spider-Man swings through the window and begins to batter him - thinking he's Death Mask. Eventually, Deadpool reveals himself to Spidey, and Spider-Man can't help but ask what he's been up to and why he's dressed as the villain. Deadpool responds by telling him all of the heroism he's done while stealing Death Mask's identity: Destroying all of his bases, deleting his personal files, setting all of his deathbots to self-destruct, and transferring all of his money into a new charity he creates called, "Make-A-Death-Wish-Foundation."

After Deadpool reveals what he's been doing as Death Mask, Spider-Man tells him, "You mean... you're the hero here?" It's at this moment that Deadpool realizes he is a hero in the alternate universe. Then, Spider-Man reminds Deadpool that Death Mask is still an issue, which prompts Deadpool to suggest they leave the alternate universe immediately before he makes his return. But once again Deadpool unknowingly saves the day because earlier when Spider-Man smashes through one of Death Mask's office windows, Deadpool tosses a book out the window - which just so happens to hit Death Mask in the head as he stands outside Fisk's Tower and kills him.

Even when Deadpool tries to be a hero, he always finds a way to fail - and when he doesn't try to be, he achieves success. But it will relieve fans to know that this is not the first time that his best pal Spider-Man sees him as a hero as he reminds him how to be one.
