While Deadpool doesn't have his own Marvel series going on right now, but he does have a manga series in Japan, and it is so popular that it is Marvel's most-read book of 2021. Launching last year in Japan, Deadpool: Samurai by Sanshirou Kasama and Hikaru Uesugi, a Shonen Jump+ series, is confirmed to be a part of the Marvel Universe continuity - meaning whatever happens in it could have repercussions in the entire Marvel Universe. This series all started with a one-shot back in 2019 and expanded to a series in December of 2020.

Deadpool first appeared in The New Mutants #98 in February of 1991. He was created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist/writer Rob Liefeld. He started as a supervillain in this series as well as X-Force, but later grew and developed into the fourth-wall-breaking hero that fans now know and love from the titular films starring Ryan Reynolds.

Deadpool: Samurai transports the popular hero back to feudal Japan, which fans have clearly taken a liking to. The first and second chapters have already been read over one million times, with the rest of the chapters following closely behind. For comparison purposes, the last North American comic book release to ship over one million copies was Star Wars #1 back in 2015. This was the first time in nearly two decades that a book hit these bestselling numbers. The American comic book that shipped the most copies in 2020 was Wolverine #1, coming in with 196,441 estimated copies.

The Merc with a Mouth's real name is Wade Wilson and is one of the most popular Marvel characters due to his tendency to break the fourth wall. He knows he is in a comic book, and often pokes fun at other characters, and himself. This is a trait that Reynolds brought to the movies with him when he took up the mantle of Deadpool, often addressing the audience while looking directly into the camera. It is this humor that draws the attention of fans from all over the world.

It should be noted that Deadpool: Samurai has an advantage over other Marvel comic books because it is free to read on the Shonen Jump+ app. The online magazine features Japanese comic books and graphic novels, or manga, in their native language, so this series is not yet available to read in English. Unfortunately, no American release of this series has been announced yet - but given the success of the Deadpool series, it would be shocking if Marvel never translated it.
