When asked about the scrapped Donald Glover Deadpool animated TV show, character creator Rob Liefeld is quite clear that he wishes it had come to fruition. Following the outright cancellation of the Deadpool animated series, writer Donald Glover "leaked" script pages via his Twitter back in March, though they were likely joke pages he put together.

Deadpool was originally created for Marvel back in 1991, first appearing in the pages of the comic The New Mutants by writers Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld. The Merc with a Mouth has frequented comics ever since, but his star began to rise following the release of the Deadpool film, which starred Ryan Reynolds as the lead and brought in record numbers at the box office for an R-rated film.

Speaking to Variety at the premiere screening for Marvel Studios' Ant-Man and the Wasp, Liefeld seemed gratified that he “can talk about this now.” The comic creator and artist has finally taken a moment to comment on the matter. After some hesitation, the creator said:

“Okay, I can talk about this now. I thought the whole thing was brilliant, and I really can’t say anything more than that, because then I’ll get in all sorts of trouble from every side...I mourn the loss of that entire project.”

Liefeld goes on to describe Glover as “a genius,” and remarks on how Marvel emphasized to him that, in spite of the interrupted project, “good things are coming.” Unfortunately, those good things don’t appear to include the animated series, helmed by brothers Donald and Stephen Glover, which was originally announced for FX last year. While the official statement released by FX cited “creative differences,” Donald Glover took to twitter to share mock script pages, stressing the point that, despite his multitude of creative projects, he wasn’t too busy to work on bringing the show to Deadpool fans.

With these new comments from Liefeld, it appears that he shares a similar sense of disappointment with Reynolds, who plays the lead in the Deadpool films. Earlier this year, Reynolds echoed Liefeld’s appreciative praise of Glover, stating, “I would’ve loved to have seen what he did with that.”

While the animated version of the character helmed by the Glovers will likely never see the light of day, it’s interesting that the topic continues to re-materialize. The fanbase for the new Deadpool films makes it clear that fans want to see more of the character, but time will tell if the “good things” Marvel referred to include an animated television treatment. In the meantime, Deadpool 2 is still in theaters, continuing its mighty box office presence.
