Warning! Spoilers for Dark Ages #3 by Marvel Comics below

Marvel's Dark Ages miniseries is underway, and artist Iban Coello just shared a new look at what happened to Deadpool in a world without power. The Merc with a Mouth gets a terrifying transformation in a first look at the character's Dark Ages design, where the talkative hero's mouth is closed shut. It's unclear whether Wade Wilson is a good guy or a villain in the new Marvel Comics universe.

In the current Dark Ages miniseries by Marvel Comics, all electricity and power were permanently shut off after Doctor Strange unleashed a massive EMP to stop the villain the Unmaker from destroying the Earth. Earth's Mightiest Heroes who relied on electricity to power their weapons and suits, such as Tony Stark, were forced to adapt after the Unmaker's defeat sent the Marvel Universe into the dark ages. Tony Stark became an alchemist, while other heroes continued on as best as possible in a world without power.

Following the release of Dark Ages #3 by Tom Taylor, Iban Coello, Brian Reber, and VC's Joe Sabino, Coello shared his designs for a handful of characters in the series. Included among them is a steam-powered Otto Octavius, a magical new take on Doctor Doom and his metal armor, Quicksilver and Black Panther's updated designs, as well as a new, scary version of Deadpool. The Dark Ages Deadpool has clearly been put through the wringer in a powerless world, as his costume is patched together, including his mouth is zipped and sewn shut.

The Merc with a Mouth's allegiance and intentions are unknown since Deadpool hasn't been properly introduced in the series (he's shown fighting Miles Morales Venom/Carnage on a cover for Dark Ages #5). However, considering how battle-damaged the antihero is, he may be fending for himself in a Marvel Universe without power. Although, it's also possible that Killgrave and Apocalypse have mind-controlled Deadpool to make him one of their deadliest assassins - which would be bad news for the survivors.

Deadpool has rarely played by the rules, so his arrival in upcoming issues of Dark Ages by Marvel Comics should throw a wrench into the plans of whoever he ends up siding against. Of course, with the merc's mouth being sewn (or zippered) shut, readers might not get the same quipping Deadpool that's become a popular fixture in the Marvel Universe. But, maybe Deadpool's found a new way to drive his fellow heroes and villains crazy, even with his mouth closed.
