Voltron is known as the Defender of the Universe, but Deadpool may have just one-upped the Super Robot. The Merc with a Mouth has just crossed over into the ongoing King in Black Marvel event to help take on Knull and his symbiote army. Deadpool has his hands full being the King of the Monsters on Staten Island, but as he observes, his new kingdom is so close to the heart of the battle, he can't avoid being dragged in to help.
At the start of his current ongoing series, Deadpool killed the King of Monsters. But whoever kills the King of Monsters becomes the King of Monsters, so now Deadpool has his own kingdom and his own subjects. So far, he has had to deal with the public image of the island, an encounter with Kraven the Hunter, and some issues with Bone Beasts. Now, he is taking on a much bigger enemy, and that calls for a much bigger solution that his usual guns and swords.
In Deadpool #10 - from Kelly Thompson and Gerardo Sandoval - new team members join Deadpool's monster crew of the Round-ish Table to take on one of Knull's symbiote dragons. With a crew consisting of a wolf-man, a land shark, a snowman, and other assorted monsters, plus a king who doesn't seem capable of dying, this should be an easy fight, right? The first strategy they use doesn't go so well, but in true Deadpool fashion, the tide is turned. How? A character from a previous issue returns and gives Deadpool a great idea: to rip off Voltron.
With the return of Jelby, Deadpool combines his hand-picked monster team with Jelby's abilities. He has his monster squad get into Jelby and form his own version of Voltron, controlled by the composite members working together. He tries calling this a Deadpool-Tron, which is turned down, eventually settling on Monster-Tron in deference to the other warriors fighting to beat the dragon. Deadpool also refers to this as a "big kaiju vs. kaiju" moment. How does his Kaiju compare to every other? It uses the various monsters' different abilities to employ rocket farts, concussive hand blasts, combat training, and eventually Jelby's gelatinous form to beat and trap the dragon.
Not only is Deadpool a skilled tactician in his own right, but as his supporting cast keeps being surprised to admit, he is actually a pretty good king. He was able to create a team from his subjects that would cause damage to a seemingly unbeatable avatar of the King in Black, and even though Deadpool felt Jelby was a traitor due to events in a previous issue, he put aside his personal problems and recruited the person he needed in the moment. Deadpool is still a relatively new king, but he did everything a good king should do. He rallied his troops, fought alongside them, adjusted his strategy to match the threat, and put his subjects' safety above his own. There is no one more suitable to be king of the monsters, and no one that could usurp Voltron, quite as well as Deadpool.
