Warning! This post contains a PREVIEW for Deadpool #1In a new preview for Marvel Comics' Deadpool #1, Wade Wilson has been tasked with killing a major Spider-Man villain. Hoping to join a new group of assassins, Deadpool apparently has to audition despite his reputation as the Merc of the Mouth. However, this preview teases his new mission will become a lot more complicated than Deadpool initially thought.

In Marvel's previous Deadpool series from Kelly Thompson, Wade became the King of the Monsters, ruling over Staten Island which in turn became Monster Island aka "Deadpoolopolis" (obviously). However, the series concluded during the King in Black crossover at the beginning of 2021. Since then, Deadpool ended up hijacking Wolverine's series, teaming up with Logan against his will until Wolverine agreed to get Deadpool a spot back on X-Force. As such, Wade has most recently been seen in the pages of X-Force from Benjamin Percy.

However, Deadpool #1 from Alyssa Wong and Martin Coccolo sees trying to get onto another team entirely. Known as the Atelier, Wade is tasked with assassinating none other than Doctor Octopus, a kill that will serve as his audition to join this elite group of assassins and mercenaries. Here are the preview pages and synopsis for the issue:

Why Is Deadpool Auditioning For An Assassins Guild?

  • DEADPOOL #1
  • MARVEL’S TOP MERC IS BACK IN BUSINESS! We all know Wade Wilson is one of the top mercenary/assassins in the Marvel Universe, even if he is simultaneously the most annoying one…but he’s pushing to make that recognition official as he auditions for the elite group known as the Atelier. Now, he has 48 hours to kill one of the world’s most famous supervillains. Only problem? He’s been kidnapped, and something…strange…is GROWING INSIDE HIM. Things are going to get gross as writer Alyssa Wong (DOCTOR APHRA, IRON FIST) and artist Martin Coccolo (BANNER OF WAR) take out their pent up aggression on everyone’s pizza-faced, jabber-mouthed, misguided, hate-to-love, love-to-hate fave…Deadpool!

Being allowed to fulfill the job however he wants, it will be interesting to see what sort of plan Deadpool comes up with to take on Doc Ock within a 48-hour period. Likewise, this will be his first and only opportunity to join the Atelier's ranks. While it appears as though Deadpool is simply looking for official recognition, it will be interesting to see if he's moved on from X-Force or if he'll be trying to be on both teams simultaneously.

At any rate, the odds that Deadpool actually manages to kill a major villain such as Doc Ock are very slim, so perhaps he'll find another way to join this cabal of killers. However, it also looks like an encounter with the Man-Thing villain known as the Harrower will be interrupting Wade's deadly audition. With the tease that something is growing inside of Wade, perhaps Deadpool #1 will be a secret team-up with the Man-Thing himself?
