The silliest heist ever to be pulled off in Marvel Comics involved master thief Gambit and the infamously amoral Deadpool impersonating two beloved superheroes. This act of criminal activity would be a first for Gambit since leaving the Thieves Guild and turning over a new leaf with the X-Men. With the questionable influence of Deadpool, however, it seems old habits die hard and Gambit was all too willing to pull off one more score.

In Deadpool v Gambit #1 by Ben Acker, Ben Blacker, and Danilo Beyruth, Gambit spots Deadpool while the two are standing in line to grab a cup of coffee. Their greeting sparked a flashback sequence of the last time they saw each other which is when they worked together to steal a number of valuable jewels. When the job was done, Gambit and Deadpool realized they had been double-crossed by the guy who set up the score. Despite the double-cross that launched the storyline for the rest of the limited series, there wouldn’t have been any diamonds for their employer to hoard in the first place if it wasn’t for that first job, and the brilliant, albeit incredibly silly, way Deadpool and Gambit pulled off the heist.

In order to avoid any unwanted attention, Gambit and Deadpool decided to dress up like two of the most upstanding superheroes in New York City while they discreetly stole a number of diamonds. Deadpool took on the role of Spider-Man and Gambit dressed up as Daredevil. Their plan was to meet in their fake superhero costumes at an art museum and get into a fight, pretending like Spider-Man and Daredevil had some feud that could only be settled with a city-wide pursuit. While the fake Daredevil chased the fake Spider-Man, the two of them used their fast hands to snag diamonds while pretending to be in an unconsolable battle.

While their methods were incredibly silly, it was a very effective heist that went off without a hitch. As proven countless times in Marvel Comics, no one is going to interfere in a battle between superheroes, no matter the damage they are causing to nearby stores and businesses. Plus, when the fight is between two heroes that are as good-hearted as Daredevil and Spider-Man, regular people around the area know it had to be serious. Gambit and Deadpool used that to their advantage and in the end were successful in their score, minus the double-cross, but honestly every good heist has a double-cross so they really should have seen that coming.

Gambit flexed his thieving muscles for this score and Deadpool regularly participates in criminal endeavors. In fact, Deadpool recently participated in stealing loot from the former Hellfire Club Clubhouse in the Savage Avengers book during the tie-in with the King In Black crossover event. Stealing for both money and for the fun of it is nothing new for the Merc with a Mouth, and Gambit was raised to be a thief and apparently can’t turn his back on a good score no matter how far he’s come as an X-Men hero. So, when the opportunity presented itself, Deadpool and Gambit impersonated two heroes to successfully pull off Marvel Comics’ silliest heist.
