Marvel's 'You Are Deadpool' Turns a Comic Into an RPG

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for You Are Deadpool #3

With the new You Are Deadpool book, Marvel has blurred the line between comics and classic role-playing game - all in a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' format. It's an idea just crazy enough to be a perfect fit for a character like Deadpool, and with the blockbuster movie Deadpool 2 on its way to theaters, fans have never wanted to step into Wade Wilson's shoes more.

In our preview of You Are Deadpool #3, newcomers can get a small sample of the book's unique layout, while current readers can see where their previous choices may lead them. But Issue #3 won't be the next step in the story for every reader, depending on the Sadness and Badness scores, they've accumulated so... it's a bit harder to explain than it might seem.

In the best way possible, trust us.

The format will be less of a surprise for seasoned RPG fans who have trashed more stat sheets and inventory pages than most new gamers have even seen. But fear not: writer Al Ewing and the Marvel masterminds ensure readers that any issue can be picked up as the first step in their journey. In just two issues, it's already an experience most comic fans will have never seen. Just... don't read the pages front to back, or you'll wind up as dead-end-ed as this preview of Issue #3.

Take a look at the preview pages below:

The preview perfectly illustrates the dangers of shrugging off the structure, condemning Deadpool to Hell with the turn of a page. Honestly, the story itself it almost secondary to the humor and unpredictability brought by the page-jumping pacing. Fold in the paper 'Deadpool Die' that was cut out of the first issue to help determine Wade's odds in combat, and the small objects lifted from the previous two issues - still stowed away in his inventory to be used when prompted - and this preview hardly scratches the surface.

It's a pleasant surprise to see Deadpool enjoying a new, innovative bit of comic book storytelling. Not only due to the unique format, but the fact that Deadpool's near future is a bit more uncertain than it has been. As Marvel reboots the antihero's story by wiping Deadpool's memory for his comic relaunch, fans will have to be patient to see what the new creative team has in mind.

In the meantime, a story sending readers from one unpredictable, branching sequence of events to the next may actually be a good thing. No time like the present to embrace change in the world of Marvel's Deadpool universe.
