Warning! Spoilers for Deadpool #8 below.

Deadpool's adventures have seen the popular antihero gain numerous powers in some of the silliest ways imaginable. But, his latest power upgrade courtesy of Elsa Bloodstone's might make the Merc with the Mouth stronger, but it comes under extremely tragic circumstances.

Deadpool is essentially an immortal mercenary, who's healing factor makes him near-impossible to kill. Besides some of the most generic superhuman abilities such as superstrength and durability, Deadpool also has some lesser-known powers such as being impervious to telepaths. Wade Wilson also had some crazy power upgrades during some of his more zany adventures, including wielding the Infinity Gauntlet, which he stole from Thanos the Mad Titan. However, his latest power upgrade is probably something he'd prefer not to have to take.

In Deadpool #8 by Kelly Thompson, Gerardo Sandoval, Victor Nava, Chris Sotomayor, and VC's Joe Sabino, Deadpool and Elsa Bloodstone, who have grown close together, find themselves captured by the Queen of the Bone Beasts. The monster has poisoned Elsa's Bloodstone in her palm, and in order to save her life, she tricks Deadpool into being captured after initially making him believe killing the monster would reverse the curse - when the Beast wants to take over Deadpool's body. Ultimately, both antiheroes end up trapped in the Bone Beast Dimension but manage to cut their way out. Tragically, as they reach the Queen, Elsa is almost dead due to the poison. In a last-ditch effort to save one of the few people he cares about, Deadpool cuts the Bloodstone from her hand and absorbs it himself.

Deadpool Poison

Bloodstone's superpowers, such as her own invulnerability and immunity to vampires, is transferred over to Deadpool as he attaches the Bloodstone to his chest. The power upgrade leaves Deadpool cracked and glowing red. He quips that he wonders why he didn't take the stone earlier. Wilson tells the Queen of the Bone Beasts that the infection sucks, but the super-powers are "serious business." Deadpool draws his sword and charges at the beast and her army.

Thomspon and Sandoval make you feel for Deadpool as Elsa is dying in his arms. It's a beautifully heartbreaking moment in one of the last comics you'd expect to see it. It remains to be seen how the Bloodstone will affect Deadpool and whether it will slowly start to kill him as well, but for now, taking the gem is the lesser of two evils, as it will seemingly keep Elsa alive for the time being. What is clear, however, is now that he is both powered-up and poisoned, Deadpool is ready to take down the evil beast for good.
