Morena Baccarin reveals she hasn't been approached yet about returning in Deadpool 3. Baccarin plays Vanessa Carlysle in the popular comic book franchise opposite Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson/Deadpool. In the comics, Vanessa is also the mutant Copycat, but Deadpool hasn't tackled that particular storyline yet. As Deadpool's girlfriend and then fiance, Baccarin's character plays an important role in the first movie. However, in Deadpool 2, she's killed early on, with her death motivating Deadpool throughout. Luckily, she's brought back to life with a time-traveling device at the end of the movie, setting up a role in Deadpool 3.

However, progress on the third film has been slow, due in part to Disney's acquisition of Fox. As of now, Deadpool 3 doesn't have a release date, though it is in development. Reynolds has met with Marvel, and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have confirmed Deadpool 3 will be R-rated like the other films in the series, despite the move to Disney. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has spoken more generally about maintaining the spirit of Deadpool for future installments, saying "There's no question that Deadpool is working, so why would we change it?" However, beyond these reassurances, it's hard to say which storylines Deadpool 3 might tackle and which characters could return.

In a recent interview on PeopleTV's Couch Surfing show, Baccarin shared she doesn't know yet if she'll appear in Deadpool 3. Baccarin said: "I have no idea. Apparently, they're still writing it. I genuinely don't know. I have not been asked, or approached. There's been no conversations yet, so I'm waiting with bated breath." However, if she is asked to return, Baccarin hopes her role will be "As big as possible. I mean, he [Reynolds] will always be the lead, but I would love to be right by his side."

Morena Baccarin as Vanessa in Deadpool

Baccarin's last comment is interesting, considering she spent the majority of Deadpool 2 reduced to a vision, essentially working in service to Reynold's character. If she were literally "right by his side" in Deadpool 3, it would be a big step up from her role in the sequel. Considering Vanessa was brought back to life, it seems likely Baccarin will be asked to return. It wouldn't make a lot of sense to show that if the Deadpool writers didn't intend on using Vanessa in the future.

An increased role for Vanessa in Deadpool 3 would also align with the push for more female representation in superhero movies. Though Marvel still has a ways to go on that front, there have been encouraging moves in recent years, especially with Captain Marvel and Black WidowDeadpool 2 did introduce another exciting female character to the franchise in Zazie Beetz's Domino, but there's always room for multiple female characters to shine. Luckily, it sounds like Baccarin is excited about the prospect of returning for Deadpool 3.
