Deadpool 3 has officially been confirmed as a rated-R entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This movie will be the third in the irreverent Deadpool franchise starring actor Ryan Reynolds. Despite its low budget, the first Deadpool film debuted to huge success, and the resulting sequel received the same positive reaction overall. This franchise has previously been considered part of the continuity of X-Men movies owned by Fox, which were narratively separate from the Disney-owned Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, when Disney acquired Fox in early 2019, the future of the X-Men movies and Deadpool in particular became unclear. Marvel would have to decide whether to keep the two continuities separate, or find a way to narratively unite them. When Disney revealed their upcoming Marvel lineup last December, there was no mention of Deadpool 3, leading fans to believe that Deadpool and the X-Men movies would not be folded into the MCU. But now, it seems like Deadpool will be making his way to the MCU after all.
In an interview with Collider, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Deadpool 3 will in fact be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, existing alongside the Avengers. However, this doesn’t mean that the Deadpool franchise will have to be sanitized for a younger audience; Feige confirmed that Deadpool 3 will still be targeted at adults and will keep its R-rating. Filming for Deadpool 3 isn’t expected to begin until 2022.
Fans have long been anticipating Deadpool joining the MCU, as it's been said before he is the one X-Men related character Marvel would not reboot. There are already plenty of theories as to how the hero could end up meeting the Avengers or even using an Infinity Stone. The biggest issue for the screenwriters will be explaining the existence of mutants in the MCU, since none of the major MCU films have previously discussed the mutants. Some fans have been talking about the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision, theorizing that it could help connect the MCU and the X-Men movies in some way.
Given the tone of the Deadpool franchise, it’s likely that the screenwriters of Deadpool 3 won’t be taking these issues too seriously. Deadpool is already known for his ability to break the fourth wall and see outside his own narrative, so his jump into the MCU will probably be treated with the same lightness and humor. Deadpool 3 might be an MCU movie now, but it will still have the same Deadpool that fans know and love.
