Rob Liefeld, who created the character, says that we should forget about seeing more Deadpool movies for now, taking aim at Disney for not using Deadpool in other media. The outspoken and controversial comic book artist is best known for creating the Merc with a Mouth back in the early 1990s, and was a champion of Ryan Reynolds taking on the role for 2016's Deadpool and 2018's sequel Deadpool 2.

In recent months, rumors have swirled about whether Disney, who now own the rights to the character after buying Fox's film studio, will ever make another Deadpool movie, given that the studio is not known for releasing R-rated material. Liefeld recently said that he doesn't mind if Deadpool 3 never happens as he had such a good time working on the first two, and has also said that he's convinced Disney doesn't have plans for a sequel right now.

Now, in an interview with IGN as part of San Diego Comic-Con@Home 2020, Liefeld says "screw movies." In a rant that's impressive even by his own usually effusive standards, Liefeld goes on to attack Disney for buying Fox for $70 billion, but not using the characters they bought properly, singling out his own creation as a prime example. He adds that Disney should be working on video games and animated series and movies featuring the character, especially given that movies are unable to shoot right now, but artists can still work from home. You can read his full comments below.

"I'm just going to tell you right now: screw movies. Screw this whole Deadpool movie talk, OK? ... Here’s what I would say. 'Hey Disney, Hi. It’s Rob. You paid $70 billion for Fox. OK? You paid $70 billion. You can't run your Disney parks, which are 50 percent of your overall earnings, they have been shut down for five months. You have no way to get your three billion dollars' worth of movies to the theaters. No Mulan, no Black Widow, no Eternals. Animators can work from home. Digital artists can work from home. Deadpool cartoons, Deadpool video games - of course they should be making them. Iger, whoever is running the ship over there, what are you doing to get a return on your $70 billion?' Of course they should be making more Deadpool video games, of course they should be making a Deadpool cartoon. What the hell? Kevin Feige, love you buddy, you're a genius, but there are other geniuses. The guys that made Into the Spider-Verse? Geniuses. Disney had nothing to do with that. Disney had nothing to do with Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Logan. Let these other lieutenants make you a return on your investments. I don't need another Deadpool movie, don't need it - got two great ones. They're perfect. There's a demand there, I hope they fill it, but I'm not sure they will."

Deadpool

There were plans for an animated Deadpool series by Donald Glover, which would have been aired on FX. But that deal fell through, with FX citing creative differences. Liefeld also tweeted last year that an animated show was coming soon, but nothing has materialized as of yet. Liefeld has also recently said that Disney should produce a Cable spin-off movie and that a planned X-Force movie would have centered on the character.

One can understand Liefeld's frustration regarding Disney's seeming lack of interest in Deadpool. He's a popular character, and the success of both movies proves that he has wide appeal. And despite Disney's reputation for producing more family-friendly fare, there's no reason why they shouldn't be exploring other options for him in diverse media such as video games and animation.

However, his outbursts aren't exactly the best way to get his message across. Rather than ranting in the media, Liefeld should attempt to set up meetings with the likes of Feige and Iger and let them know his thoughts. By attacking them from a distance, Liefeld only damages his own reputation, and stands the chance of making the bosses at Disney and Marvel even less willing to use Deadpool.
