If Deadpool Joins The MCU, What Happens To His Universe?

Deadpool 3 is set to bring Ryan Reynold’s “merc-with-a-mouth” into the MCU, but it’s unsure what’s going to happen with the ensemble of supporting characters that he helped to introduce. Leslie Uggams is the only other actor confirmed for returning to the franchise, reprising her role as Blind Al. The promise of Hugh Jackman’s return for Deadpool 3 has created a big stir around the sequel, adding speculation as to who else will be joining Wade Wilson in his first MCU outing. Deadpool 3 will be the first movie in the franchise since Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Disney and Marvel Studios also acquired rights to the X-Men movie franchises, which the Deadpool movies shared a universe with.

While the possibilities for adding new faces to Deadpool 3 has increased exponentially, it’s still yet to be confirmed whether anyone besides Blind Al is returning. The actors for Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Cable (Josh Brolin), and Domino (Zazie Beetz) have all expressed interest in coming back for the third installment and would be welcome additions to the story. Multi-versal madness opens the way for the integration of any number of mutants from Fox’s franchise, if Deadpool 3 carries that MCU burden, they could include the mutants that have already shared screentime with Wade Wilson. Marvel could be keeping certain character’s returns or involvements a secret while distracting the fanbase with the big Wolverine/Deadpool team-up dream announcement. However, ignoring the potential of exploring Cable and Deadpool’s relationship further would be a disservice.

What Cable Returning For Deadpool 3 Could Mean

Back in 2004 one of the greatest “buddy team-ups” in all of Marvel history was created. The Cable & Deadpool comic series began after the cancelation of each character’s solo series at the time and ran for 50 issues. An odd pairing at first glance, with Deadpool’s “shoot first and talk to yourself about it later,” mentality (and Cable being all too serious all the time), but nevertheless the series was well received. Deadpool 3 should explore Cable’s techno-organic virus and the timeline that made him so grim, as well as the depths of his love/hate for Wade. Allowing Deadpool and Cable more time onscreen together as allies, unlike most of Deadpool 2, would create more memorable comic book moments for MCU moviegoers.

Since Sir Patrick Stewart cameoed as Professor Xavier in Doctor Strange & The Multiverse of Madness, speculation has increased about when and how more of the mutants will be introduced. The writers have room to introduce more mutants through exposition thanks to Cable’s time-traveling capabilities, and the fact that he is the future son of Cyclops. Deadpool’s affinity to break the fourth wall to complain about the lack of present X-Men in his movies might finally pay off. The time travel that Wade used to retcon his own movie origin could be the tool used to explain the Fox movies’ X-Men aren’t dead and how they will arrive in the MCU. Cable’s presence in Deadpool 3 would mean he’s officially part of the MCU and, hopefully, a slew of future X-Men announcements.

How Domino Could Join The MCU

Despite what Deadpool has to say, being lucky has incredible cinematic value in Deadpool 2, and should Zazie Beetz reprise her role in Deadpool 3, it could spell out another entertainingly powerful onscreen team-up. While Beetz’s charisma in the role is enough to carry her dangerously, yet gracefully through every scene, it’s Domino’s reputation in the comics that would give her a place in the greater MCU. A mutant born of top-secret government breeding programs, Domino is well known for her time spent with X-Force, the mutant black ops team wasted in Deadpool 2, and eventually turned into a punchline. Having Domino, one of the team’s most prominent and powerful members in the comics, and Cable, the team’s founder in the comics, back together in Deadpool 3 teases another culmination of X-Force that would give the two characters a home in the MCU.

Can The MCU Have Its Own X-Force?

Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios have an opportunity to tap into a treasure trove of interesting storylines and powerful characters. They also have the rights for the tabled X-Force project from their 20th Century Fox acquisition and can introduce other popular mutants like Olivia Munn’s Psylocke from Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse. With the potential to expand upon Cable, as well as Domino, the most overpowered X-Men yet, the MCU has plenty of mutants at its disposal yet to be introduced. Ryan Reynolds already proved there’s an audience for an R-rated superhero franchise. Marvel would clean up at the box office by featuring a black ops team formed to protect mutantkind by any means necessary. Deadpool 3 should bring back X-Force for good, for real this time, and expand upon the concept as a way to introduce other X-Men mutants that have been missing from the MCU thus far.
