Patrick Stewart could be returning to the MCU in Deadpool 3, which can help to address one missing storyline from 2017's Logan. Both Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman hung up their superhero costumes after Logan, proclaiming that James Mangold's dramatic entry into Fox's X-Men franchise would be their last foray in the comic book movie world. However, since then, Stewart reprised his role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Jackman has been confirmed to be appearing in Deadpool 3 alongside Ryan Reynolds, so it seems neither can say a permanent goodbye to their iconic X-Men characters.

Deadpool 3 will mark the first time a character from Fox's X-Men franchise has made their way into the MCU, as Stewart previously portrayed an alternate version of Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X, as a member of Multiverse of Madness' Illuminati. Reynolds will reprise his role of Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool, for Deadpool 3, supposedly making a permanent transition into the MCU following Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019. Not much is known about the story for Deadpool 3 at the moment, other than it will certainly include the concept of the Multiverse, and that Jackman would be joining Reynolds as Wolverine for the highly-anticipated adventure.

Patrick Stewart Could Be Appearing In Deadpool 3

Speaking recently to Comicbook.com, Patrick Stewart revealed that the door is open for his return to the MCU in Deadpool 3, stating that he had been "told to stand-by," but stressing that he didn't know more than that. This would mark Stewart's second appearance in the MCU proper, but his first as the character he portrayed in Fox's X-Men series between 2000's X-Men and 2017's Logan, as he previously portrayed a variant of Charles Xavier. While Patrick Stewart's appearance in Deadpool 3 hasn't yet been officially confirmed, the fact that the opportunity is there for him to return is incredibly exciting for Marvel Studios' viewers.

There have been no signs of Marvel Studios introducing a new Professor X for the MCU's X-Men, though this must be inevitable as some point in the future. Stewart's return in Deadpool 3 would allow permanent closure for the character, which was originally pulled-off brilliantly in Logan before his appearance in Multiverse of Madness. Seeing Stewart back on screen with Jackman as Professor X and Wolverine would be fantastic, not least because he would also be interacting with Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool for the first time on screen.

Deadpool 3 Is Set Before Logan (& Can Fill Gaps In Fox’s X-Men Franchise)

In a separate interview, Hugh Jackman revealed that Deadpool 3 would take place before the events of Logan, meaning both Wolverine and Professor X would be alive and ready to take on a new adventure. Logan took place in 2029, and introduced audiences to a world where the mutant population had become dangerously low, but since this wasn't the case during previous modern-day films such as X-Men: Days of Future Past, there is a lot to explore when these characters are reintroduced during Deadpool 3. This means that Deadpool 3 won't impact the events of Logan, but could uncover some sought-after mysteries.

Perhaps the most prominent of these is the question of what happened to the world's mutants, and the X-Men in particular. Logan revealed that Charles had wiped out the X-Men during a dementia-caused telepathic seizure, but aside from a few passing comments, this storyline wasn't investigated in depth. This is something that Deadpool 3 could delve into in more detail, especially since the death of the X-Men took place a year prior to Logan, which could line up perfectly with the MCU's timeline. While something this dramatic would normally be avoided in a Deadpool film, this might be the final chance to explore this side of Charles Xavier's story.

The Fox X-Men Franchise Needs To End With Deadpool 3

fox x-men series should end with deadpool 3

With the releases of X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants after Disney's acquisition of Fox, the X-Men franchise at Fox never really saw the ending it perhaps deserved. Deadpool 3 could be the perfect opportunity for Marvel Studios to finally tie up the stories of these beloved characters, closing the chapter on Fox's now-defunct franchise before introducing the MCU's official X-Men team. There is speculation that a few Fox X-Men actors will reprise their roles for Phase 6's Avengers: Secret Wars, but this could only be in a cameo capacity. Deadpool 3 could mark the official end of the franchise if this lost Logan storyline is explored.

Patrick Stewart's return in Deadpool 3 would allow his character to be fleshed-out even further, showing the tragic end of the X-Men in their universe before Deadpool officially makes his way into the 616-universe. Mutants began to be introduced into the MCU during Phase 4, with the likes of Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, and Namor being revealed to be mutants, so it surely won't be long before the X-Men finally come together. For this to work, however, the door has to be closed completely on Fox's X-Men franchise, and Deadpool 3 might be the best place for this to occur.
