Deadpool 3 stars Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds poke fun at one another on social media after Jackman posted a joke about prepping to return to the role of Wolverine. Jackman debuted the character in the 2000 film X-Men, going on to reprise the role in every X-Men film except 2019's Dark Phoenix, including three spinoff films. These films were the prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the solo film The Wolverine, and 2017's Logan, which featured the death of the character and was thought to be Jackman's final stint in the role.

While that remained the case for half a decade, it was recently announced that Wolverine would be returning in Deadpool 3. The project is the first Deadpool film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing his signature R-rated fourth-wall-breaking humor to the long-running franchise. Currently the plot details of the film are being kept tightly under wraps, but it has been confirmed that the film is being directed by Shawn Levy and is set for a theatrical release on November 8, 2024.

Today on his official Twitter account, Jackman shared a photo of a car with three deep scratches in the door, teasing that he needed to work on his aim in order to play Wolverine. In the Tweet, he also jokingly retitled Deadpool 3 as Wolverine 10. After Reynolds responded with a joking "That’s my Kia Sorento, you d--k," Jackman suggested that he relax with "some cat-cow poses."

What Role Could Wolverine Play in the Story of Deadpool 3?

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds "spoiling" Deadpool 3

The social media campaigns for the Deadpool films have always been humorous, including Reynolds getting his The Proposal co-star Betty White to give the first film four out of four Golden Girls. However, Wolverine himself isn't a particularly humorous character, especially in his most recent cinematic outing. Indeed, Jackman has promised that Deadpool 3's Wolverine will be the angrier version of the character, just as acerbic and grumpy as ever.

The question remains, then, as to exactly how the character will fit the tone and storyline of Deadpool 3. It seems most likely that he will take the straight-man position that was played previously by the earnest X-Men character Colossus (Stefan Kapičić). His duty will probably be to be annoyed by Ryan Reynolds' antics, though Wolverine's reaction when provoked may just be to carve the endlessly regenerating Deadpool up as many times as possible.
