Deadpool 2 wrapped up its blockbuster opening weekend with a new box office record for an R-rated film overseas. Once again starring Ryan Reynolds as the title character, Deadpool 2 approached its opening weekend with the weight of the world on its shoulders, following the massive debut of the first Deadpool movie in 2016. Bolstered by the $132.4 million that the film made domestically in its opening three-day frame, Deadpool made an additional $132.3 million in its debut in foreign territories, ending its weekend with a global cume of $264.7 million.

In addition to the success of the original film, looming over the Merc with a Mouth's second big screen adventure was Marvel Studios' Avengers: Infinity War, which has dominated the box office since its late April, having grossed just more than $1.8 billion in global ticket sales to date. Still, Deadpool 2 marched forward - even with the prospects of fewer ticket sales due to its R-rating - and it has clearly emerged victorious, even going as far as to set new records internationally. Combined with the film's domestic take, Deadpool 2 grossed more than $300 million this weekend.

According Box Office Pro, Deadpool 2 set a new record for an R-rated movie opening overseas this weekend with an estimated $176.3 million, which is $44 million more than its predecessor made in its foreign debut. Not only did the film's massive foreign opening easily top the previous record-holder for an R-rated movie overseas - Logan in 2017, which made $160 million in its first three days - it also set a studio record for 20th Century Fox for having the largest foreign debut by eclipsing the $174 million opening of PG-13-rated X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014.

Deadpool From Deadpool 2

What make's Deadpool 2's new record even more amazing is that the film did not open in the normally lucrative Chinese film market. Instead, the record was the culmination of its No. 1 take in all the other 81 overseas markets it opened in. Outside of the United States, Deadpool 2 made the most in the U.K., with $18 million, followed by South Korea ($17 million) and Russia ($11.8 million). Domestically, Deadpool 2 made an estimated $125 million, which is about $7 million short of the original film's domestic debut in 2016, but it's much higher than the $100 million gauged in early estimates.

While Deadpool 2 didn't top its predecessor stateside (it still set R-rated records for Thursday preview and Friday box office takes), there's no question that Fox will be thrilled with the explosive debut of the film overseas, not to mention its overall performance thus far. Whether the film's final global cume will top Deadpool's $783 million remains to be seen, but there's no question that, given Deadpool 2's blistering opening frame, it will give have more than a legitimate shot at the top.
