Wade Wilson's obsession with The Golden Girls continues as Deadpool 2 releases a hilarious spoof video inspired by the classic '80s sitcom. Between the X-Force twist and the controversial post-credit scenes, there is a lot to unpack in the movie. While the film is already both a critical and box office success, fans have been divided regarding some of the creative choices that director David Leitch alongside writers Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese and Ryan Reynolds made in the movie.
Known for their viral marketing, Reynolds and his team have worked double time in promoting Deadpool 2. The film didn't have the luxury of having a longer marketing period compared to its predecessor due to Marvel Studios' Avengers: Infinity War being released only three weeks before the Fox sequel. Despite that, the Canadian actor has been relentless in making sure that people were hyped about the film, and with a $360 million haul worldwide in just a week, it's safe to say that Reynolds' funny promo antics worked.
A new Deadpool 2 video hilariously spoofs the opening montage of The Golden Girls, complete with the sitcom's iconic theme song, "Thank You For Being A Friend" by Cynthia Fee. The clip is actually Deadpool 2's special way of thanking the fans for supporting the sequel. Clocking at just a little over a minute, it features various clips from the movie with designated screen time for all of the film's main players including Wade, Domino, Cable, Dopinder, and Peter. Check it out above.
Wade's love for The Golden Girls has actually been a running gag in the last two Deadpool films. Part of the first movie's viral marketing was a tribute to the show's 30th anniversary back in 2015. Then, in the sequel's Bob Ross-inspired teaser trailer, the foul mouth mutant mentioned Betty White, who played naive Rose Nylund in the NBC project. Finally, the film itself featured Deadpool's katanas engraved with the name, Bea Arthur - the actress who played sarcastic Dorothy Zbornak in the series.
The ongoing bit was actually mined from the comics. The Merc with a Mouth's obsession with The Golden Girls, especially Arthur, has been a running gag in print for years. However, it's not entirely clear how and why Deadpool is head over heels for the late actress and her Golden Girls character - perhaps it's because of the fact that they share the same snarky sense of humor. Nevertheless, seeing it being carried over to his live-action movies is a great homage to his comics. Other than the foursome ladies from Florida, Deadpool supposedly also has a penchant for the Olsen twins (Mary-Kate and Ashley), resulting in a 14-state restraining order from the Full House alumnae - something that has yet to factor into Reynolds' films.
