Deadpool 2 co-writer Rhett Reese says Vanessa Carlysle (Morena Baccarin) could in a future movie finally become her fully realized comic book iteration, the mutant Copycat. Though you wouldn't know it from her appearances in Deadpool and its sequel Deadpool 2, Vanessa Carlysle is supposed to be a lot more than just Wade Wilson's love interest. In the original comics, Vanessa is actually a character named Copycat, a shape-shifting mutant who becomes a member of the X-Force.
Unfortunately for fans of Copycat, the Deadpool movies have shied away from revealing Vanessa's true mutant nature. In the first film, she serves mainly as a damsel in distress for Deadpool to rescue. In the just-released sequel, things get even worse for Vanessa when she is killed early in the movie in a blatant act of fridging (killing off the love interest merely to propel the plot and/or the hero's emotional arc). Later, in the movie's wild end-credits sequence, Deadpool goes back in time to stop Vanessa being killed, arguably negating the movie's entire plot but also happily preserving the character to appear in future movies.

What else might the franchise have in store for Vanessa after fridging her then bringing her back to life? Speaking to CBR, Deadpool 2 co-writer Rhett Reese discussed Vanessa's roller coaster ride in Deadpool 2, and how he broke the news to Morena Baccarin that she wasn't dead after all. Along the way, Reese revealed that Copycat could indeed be in the cards for a future movie.
“Now we can bring her back as Copycat, and Morena [Baccarin] was very thrilled when she got the call. ‘We got the time machine working, and you’re still alive!’ ‘I knew it!’ It was really funny.”
After blatantly employing the character as a love interest/fridging victim in the first two movies, the least the writers could do for Vanessa is let her become a mutant shape-shifter who gets to kick serious butt alongside the other members of X-Force. Just how to handle that reveal after letting Vanessa give no hint of her mutant abilities in the first two films might be a tricky question. Then again, after the time travel "twist," pretty much anything can readily be explained. A montage of flashbacks showing Vanessa secretly doing shape-shifter things when Wade Wilson wasn't looking should do the trick.
As we've now learned in the wake of Deadpool 2's arrival, when/if Vanessa does reveal herself as Copycat, it likely will happen in a full-fledged X-Force movie rather than Deadpool 3. With the team now assembled (except for the ones who died in Deadpool 2 and won't be brought back via time travel), the plan is for the series to continue with a first X-Force movie to be written and directed by Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods). Josh Brolin's Cable and Zazie Beetz's Domino are both expected to return, along with fan-favorite/viral marketing goldmine Peter (Rob Delaney).
