Deadpool 2 almost had a surprise cameo from X-Men villain Omega Red, and a new photo shows what the character would have looked like. The mega-hit sequel introduced a wealth of new characters, and had a chance to depict even more for the first time - and at least one of them certainly would've intrigued X-Men fans. Omega Red has long been a popular adversary for Deadpool and X-Force, among other mutant heroes, and his cameo in Deadpool 2 would've driven home how dangerous he's supposed to be.

The sequel also introduced the Ice Box Prison, which is the site of some of its most important scenes and biggest set pieces. Apparently, this is where we would have met Omega Red as part of a surprise cameo appearance, as portrayed by New York Jets rookie guard Dakoda Shepley. Restraint collar and all, Omega Red has popped up online for the first look at the villain.

Deadpool 2 makeup supervisor and designer Bill Corso revealed a photo of Omega Red from the cameo via his Instagram account on Sunday. The supervillain is set to appear in a screening of an uncut version of Deadpool 2 at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 21 at 10 p.m. PT. Known as the "Super Duper $@%!#& Cut", the extended edition contains 15 minutes of new footage and will be available on Blu-ray on August 21.

The special features for the Deadpool 2 Blu-ray have also teased "Chess With Omega Red", which will likely be part of, or related to, his cameo in the movie. It can be assumed that the chess scenes will find a way to mock the chess games played between Magneto and Professor X. Considering that this is Deadpool, it can also be safely assumed that Omega Red will have some jokes in him. And vulgar ones, at that.

Omega Red is a popular villainous character with big-time potential in future MCU productions - provided Disney closes the deal on acquiring Fox. If he could one day break out of the Ice Box, he could be a formidable foe for Deadpool and X-Force. His tentacles made from Carbonadium - in the comics, the Russians' answer to Adamantium - have also made him a natural foe for Wolverine. Fans of the character will surely be excited to see him in the flesh in Deadpool 2, if only for a brief scene or two.

The fan service will be nice with the Omega Red cameo, but it's clear that he's a villain with far greater potential than just one fleeting, inconsequential appearance. The character's history is compelling enough to make him the big bad in a future Marvel movie once it's possible. Corso teased him and other cameos as "blink and you'll miss them" kind of characters, so it's possible that his cameo isn't even that prominent. It remains to be seen whether Omega Red will have another appearance after this one, but for Marvel fans, his appearance in the extended cut should be one of the more talked-about new cameos at SDCC.
