Deadpool Merc with a Mouth

Since the initial concept footage for Deadpool was leaked in 2014, there has been a meteoric rise for the property over at Fox Studios. It all culminated with the release of the film this past February, that resulted in it becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all-time and it seemed that the franchise was infallible.

Deadpool 2 has been in development since the original was still filming, with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland), as well as the movie's star and producer Ryan Reynolds firmly guiding the ship. However, this past weekend, the sequel and the franchise as a whole, was dealt a huge blow when it was revealed that director Tim Miller would not be returning to the director's chair for the upcoming movie.

Despite the behind-the-scenes drama over at Fox Studios, it seems as if the sequel is still moving ahead. According to ComicBook, they have confirmed an earlier report of a working title for the sequel and it might be slightly unexpected. While the movie is in production, it will be known to the cast, crew, (and fans) as "Love Machine."

Deadpool Merc with a Mouth

Big movies often use fake titles for their films while they are in production. The movie's creators often choose a deceptive title for two general reasons: The title serves as a placeholder internally for the movie's crew, until a final name is settled upon; and the second reason is probably of more importance, as the secret titles are also meant to throw nosy fans and reporters off of the given production's scent. It's a practice that has gone back for decades, with Return of the Jedi, probably setting the standard with it's title, Blue Harvest, during production in the early 1980s.

The discovery of the movie's title does seem convenient, especially in light of all of the recent reports of turmoil in the production. However, it still may provide clues shedding light on the direction that Reynolds may be taking in the sequel. It has been widely reported that there will be two major additions to Deadpool 2, including Marvel Comics mainstays, Cable and Domino. Domino has been a love interest of Deadpool in the past and it's still unclear if Morena Baccarin (Gotham) will be reprising her role of Vanessa in the sequel.

However, this is Deadpool after all. The more hilarious option would be to have it be a reference to Cable himself. The stoic mutant from the future should provide the perfect straight-man foil to the zany antics of Wade Wilson. Perhaps, the title is simply a running joke and referendum on their partnership in the film, Deadpool's comedic infatuation with the impossibly cool mutant from the future, or even Cable's cybernetic arm itself (which seems custom made for cuddling).

A new director for Deadpool 2 still needs to be chosen, as well as major decisions in the casting department are still up in the air. So expect to hear much more from Deadpool 2 in the coming weeks as details of the sequel are finalized.
