Cable is the focus of the trailer. The grim, time-traveling mutant soldier is portrayed by Josh Brolin, who also plays Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the post-credits scene of the first Deadpool, Cable was announced outright to appear in the sequel by Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) himself. In Reynolds' trademark pull-the-rug-out-from-under-you fashion, the new peek at Deadpool 2 opens with what seems to be a traditional action movie-style introduction to the X-Man from the future before Deadpool interrupts the proceedings by complaining about the unfinished CGI on Cable's metal arm, which is a hilarious jab at the unsightly CGI removal of Henry Cavill's mustache in Justice League. Then the jokes about Thanos begin.
Taking hands-on control of the trailer, Deadpool announces, "Ah, f@ck it, I'll do it myself!" This is a direct quote from Thanos' post-credits scene appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron. By that point in the MCU's history, Thanos had completely failed to acquire any of the Infinity Stones he covets due to the ineptitude of minions like Loki (Tom Hiddleston). While the credits to Avengers 2 roll, the Mad Titan is seen opening up a vault and donning the Infinity Gauntlet (sans any Infinity Stones, of course), as he growls, "I'll do it myself." Deadpool's line is a subtle but pitch-perfect spoof of the last time Thanos has graced our screens (before the Infinity War begins this May), but of course, with a bit of profanity to make it a very Deadpool thing to say.
Deadpool decides the best way to sell his sequel is by goofing on Toy Story, which leads to the second Thanos reference. The Merc With A Mouth introduces a Cable action figure to "Sheriff Deadpool," a Deadpool figurine dressed as Woody from Toy Story. After shooting Sheriff Deadpool, Cable grouses that "Regeneration powers, activate!" isn't a typical catchphrase Deadpool would say. The red-clad mutant retorts, "Zip it, Cable! I've got the stones to help you." before launching an attack crotch-first. This yet another wacky dig at Thanos, who spent several movies needing other evildoers to help him find the Infinity Stones, all for naught. Maybe Thanos should have asked Deadpool to get him 'the Stones' to begin with.
It was quite a coup when Reynolds scored the services of Josh Brolin as Cable for the sequel to his blockbuster 2016 X-Men spinoff. Brolin is not only a respected and sought-after actor known for his fierce, tough guy charisma, but as he also portrays Thanos, the actor is the centerpiece of Marvel Studio's biggest film ever, Infinity War. FOX wooing Brolin to also portray Cable means the actor portraying the rival studio's most powerful super villain also appears as an anti-hero in their own superhero flick just a couple of weeks later. Fans will be treated to a double dose of Josh Brolin in both Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 this coming May.
