Deadpool & Cable Relationship Is Inspired By Comics

According to the director of Deadpool 2, fans of Wade and Cable's relationship in the comics will be very pleased with the movie. The moment fans knew Deadpool would finally be making it to theaters, talk began about whether Cable would eventually appear on film. Both created by Rob Liefeld, the two have spent the past few decades teaming up on a number of adventures. And given their vastly different personalities, hilarity always ensues. The end credits of the first film confirmed that Cable would appear in Deadpool 2, and now we're much closer to that reality.

While Josh Brolin has been cast in the role for a little while now, it wasn't until earlier this week that we got our first full look at Cable in Deadpool 2. The new image has already set the Internet ablaze, from discussion of Cable's wardrobe to the teddy bear on his waist. But while we now know how Cable will appear in the new film, we still have no idea what the chemistry will be like between Brolin and Ryan Reynolds. Per David Leitch, the film's director, fans have nothing to worry about when it comes to the dynamic between Wade and Cable.

CBR spoke with Leitch about Deadpool 2 and the director assured fans that the movie would be drawing heavily from the Cable and Deadpool comics.

Deadpool Cable Annoying

"Cable has a really interesting and complex backstory. Obviously, no film could ever encapsulate the entire backstory, so I think we’ll find the first introduction is about who this character is. When you look at the Cable and Deadpool comic book series, you see how there is banter between them. Whether they are on opposite sides or not, they are definitely formidable to each other. One is frustrating to the other. The chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin is amazing. It’s not unlike what you see in the Cable and Deadpool series."

As Leitch notes, Cable's backstory is deep and confusing given all the time travel and alternate timelines. That said, future films like X-Force will likely dive more into the anti-hero's history. For Deadpool 2, the main thing will be introducing Cable and starkly contrasting him with Deadpool. Cable is generally depicted as dour, serious, and very much concerned with the mission at hand. With Deadpool embodying the exact opposite of those traits, audiences should be in for a great pairing.

While we wait for more concrete information on Deadpool 2, the movie's multiple outdoor shoots have led to lots of looks at the production. We've seen Cable in action thanks to a set video, and gotten our first glimpse of the time traveling mutant teaming up with Domino in a scene. With next year's release of Deadpool 2 fast-approaching, we shouldn't have to wait much longer to see Wade and Cable finally join forces.
