Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan is one of the many names to be rumored for the coveted role of Cable in Deadpool 2, but the thespian claims any reports about his possible involvement are "fabricated." Ever since the post-credits scene in last year's Deadpool revealed the time-traveling mutant would be a part of the sequel, fans have been extremely curious to see who is cast. Currently, Michael Shannon is said to be the frontrunner, after talks with Brad Pitt broke down. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick teased recently a final decision would come "very soon," and with Deadpool 2 aiming to start production this summer, the creative team doesn't have much time left to find their Cable.

The Brosnan rumors started back in January when a photo of Brosnan, Hugh Jackman, and Ryan Reynolds striking a pose together went viral, and shortly afterwards there was talk that the part was going to go to the ex-007. However, it would appear that fans can cross off Brosnan from the list - at least for now until something else comes up.

While on Jimmy Kimmel Live (watch the full video below), Brosnan was asked about the now-famous picture of the aforementioned dynamic trio, and the actor debunked any speculation that he was in consideration for Cable:

"Not true. Nothing's come my way yet. It's completely made up. We were sitting waiting for a plane, the three of us, and the guy said, 'Quick. Let's get a photograph. Jump in the middle.' Mr. Reynolds said, 'Let's do three wise monkeys,' put it out there, and it went viral."

Brosnan's comments certainly disprove the earlier chatter about him, though he could still be in the running. Actors involved with major tentpole projects such as this have known to be coy, allowing the studio to roll out information on the company's schedule. Conceivably, that might be what is happening here, especially since Kimmel and Brosnan joked about that very topic. If Fox had cast the actor for Cable and told him not to reveal anything, all he could do is deny it. It's worth remembering that Jason Momoa had been locked in as the DCEU's Aquaman for years before his involvement was made public, so at this juncture anything is possible. At the same time, the meeting of Brosnan, Reynolds, and Jackman could have simply been a happy coincidence, as Brosnan implies.

Hopefully an official announcement is right around the corner, but it is a good sign the filmmakers are taking their time to find the right man for the job. Cable is going to be an important character moving forward, particularly with an X-Force movie in development, so this isn't something that can be rushed. Viewers may want to keep an eye on Reynolds' always-entertaining social media channels - considering Zazie Beetz's casting as Domino was shared in a rather unconventional manner on the actor's popular Twitter page. Reynolds could have something similar up his sleeve for Nathan Summers.
