This post contains SPOILERS for Deadpool 2

-

Writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese share that they originally wanted to permanently kill Vanessa resulting in a much darker Deadpool 2. Coming back to write the sequel to the 2016 sleeper hit, the writing duo, alongside Ryan Reynolds have possibly come up with one of the most talked about post-credit scenes ever. The stinger featuring Wade going back in time to prevent several tragedies such as the X: Men Origins: Wolverine and Green Lantern may be fun to watch, but it also caused people to ask whether it's canon or not.

Reese and Wernick eventually cleared out the confusion, confirming that the post-credit scenes are canon. This includes Wade coming back to prevent the death of Vanessa - which could be a bummer for some who were glad to see a comic book film actually have some stakes. That said, people shouldn't count on the time-traveling device to stick around any longer, meaning that the heroes won't have the luxury of traveling through time moving forward.

Sitting down with CBR to talk all things Deadpool 2, the writing partners revealed that the original ending of the film didn't include Vanessa being resurrected. Reese explained that they were going to stick with that ending, but eventually changed their minds. “We originally did not save her. It was interesting — we thought we might have to save her with the time machine, because the audience would be mad at us, but they were accepting of her being dead,” he explained.

Wernick chimed in the conversation and admitted it wasn't easy going through the motions of seeing her die early in the film only to revive her at the very end. “It was a difficult decision, but one, story-wise, that we felt we had to make," the writer said, "and then we got to have our cake and eat it too by bringing her back to life at the very end.”

Despite Reese and Wernick's explanation, some may view it as a cop-out, especially since the writers anchored Wade's narrative on the death of his girlfriend. There could've been other ways to evoke the same emotional turmoil without needing to kill Vanessa and then nonchalantly bringing her back via a humorous post-credit scene. Perhaps the couple could've lost their own baby through miscarriage, which would've still resulted in Deadpool tapping into his paternal instincts, leading to genuinely developing an attachment to Russell. Further, this scenario allows Cable to be more empathetic to Wade considering they both lost their respective children.

On the flip side, given the existence of the time-traveling device, it made sense that Wade would want to use that to undo any kind of personal tragedy, regardless of what it is. After all, Cable already used it to save his life. It'll be interesting if Vanessa's death would factor in her own character trajectory and her relationship with Wade moving forward.
