Dead by Daylight now has expanded lore for players to glean on that reveals the game's universe throughout the archives. This guide will outline how the archives work and what to expect.

Dead by Daylight is a popular asymmetrical survival-horror game that entails a group of survivors being stranded in a limbo-state of reality that's overlooked by an evil eternal presence called, "The Entity". They are forced to take trails and survive situations in various realms while evading a killer within their own stomping grounds. This game was originally released on June 14, 2016, by Behaviour Interactive and it's now available on multiple gaming platforms. Players take control of four distinct survivors that each has its own perks and stats while the killer is also controlled by another player, as well. Players need to power-up five generators that are scattered throughout the map so they can open up the exit gates and escape. Meanwhile, the killer looms throughout the map, snatching up the survivors and placing them on meathooks as a sacrifice for The Entity.

Since its original release date, Dead by Daylight has had a number of updates that bring in popular horror-movie killers and survivors into the fray. Thus, there is now an entire library of information that delves into the overall mythos of Dead by Daylight which fleshes out entire backstories and beyond. As players progress through the archives, they can unlock sundry; bloodpoints, cinematics, logs, memories, and charms. Overall, The Archives are layered with different categories that each provide specific leveling systems and rewards. It's also important to note that some rewards are only available for a limited time within The Archive. So, players are encouraged to make frequent visits to see what's available and begin a weekly grind of the completion of different challenges.

The Rift, Tomes, and Shrine explained in Dead by Daylight

The Archives are broken up into three distinct categories; Rift, Tome, and Shrine. They each offer something unique to help players understand the survivors' backstories, perks, and even unlock some cosmetics. There's a branching algorithm of various challenges that players must complete in order to achieve higher status and unlock character origin-story elements. Some challenges can be rolled-over across different trails and give players multiple chances to complete. However, there are higher Tier challenges that only give players one chance to accomplish. The following is a list of the different layers of the Archive and how it functions.

  • The Tome

The Tome is the core of the entire Archive that's an interconnecting tree of nodes called "The Auris Web". All these nodes are constructed with branching challenges that will each need to be completed during trials. These challenges can be something simple like, "help a survivor off a meat hook" or "repair 2 generators during a trial", etc. The completion of a challenge will unlock the succeeding one, each with differing Tiers. Once players complete an entire web of challenges, they will be rewarded a 'Completion Charm' and 'Rift Fragments'. Charms are unique cosmetic items that are attached to the belt of the survivors that are specifically tied to their origin stories. Thus, killers can also get charms, but they're only decored on the meathooks.

Completing an entire web of challenges will also unlock the next Tier of challenges called "Master Challenges". Even though the earlier challenges can be stacked and carried over across several trails, 'Master Challenges' will need to be done in just one trial. Completing the 'Master Challenges' are a much more difficult feat but, they offer more robust rewards. The kicker is that some of these challenges can only be completed by using a specific perk that's only available for purchase in the 'Shrine' for one week. Therefore, stopping by to shop around within The Shrine is a good idea before taking on the higher Tier challenges.

  • The Rift

The Rift is basically the same concept as a 'Battle Pass', in which it comes with its own differing Tiers and its own challenges. The completion of nodes within 'The Auris Web' will grant XP which gradually builds up to create a 'Rift Fragment'. Rift Fragments are accumulated toward a leveling system (that has a max of 70) and each fragment will reward players with new; charms, outfits, and Auric Cells. Auric Cells is a special currency in Dead by Daylight that can be used to unlock premium rewards that are available for a limited time. So, if players have an eye on a certain reward, The Rift is only open for about 70 days at a time and it's recommended to keep grinding until that goal is reached before it resets.

  • The Shrine

The Shrine is fundamentally used to unlock 'Teachable Perks' that are available every week. Around midnight every Wednesday, The Shrine resets itself and there are four new 'Teachable Perks' available for purchase for the next 7 days. Teachable Perks are basically used to unlock the possibility to receive unique perks for characters while in the Bloodweb. Even though these perks can be unlocked at level 30-40 by simply partaking in the Bloodweb, The Shrine is a good alternative by purchasing them with 'Iridescent Shards.' These shards can be collected by completing trails and slowly building them up. The higher the player's level, the more shards will be rewarded. When these perks appear in the Shrine, they cost around 2,000-2,700 Iridescent Shards. Thus, special characters can be purchased in The Shrine for 9,000 shards, along with cosmetics with a varying price range.
