Horror game Dead by Daylight is finally receiving crossplay, allowing fans to play together across multiple different platforms. The game initially launched just for Windows in 2016, with console releases coming steadily over the past few years. Last year, it was even added to Switch.

Dead by Daylight earned accolades from fans for its distinct approach to asymmetrical multiplayer. The game casts up to four players as survivors and has a fifth player fill the role of a murderous monster with the goal of hunting down and sacrificing players to a dark god. While the game features many original characters with their own distinct perks and abilities, Dead by Daylight earned new prominence when it began to introduce licensed characters from other horror properties as playable characters in the game. Infamous horror creations like Stranger Things' Demogorgon, Freddy Krueger, and even Silent Hill 2's Pyramid Head are all present in Dead by Daylight, among many others. The chance to step into the shoes of horror icons has resonated deeply with fans of the genre.

These fans should be excited to know that Dead by Daylight is now officially offering crossplay. Players on Steam, the Microsoft Store, Xbox One, PS4, and Switch will now all be able to play together, as will Stadia players when the game launches on that service next month. Only mobile players are excluded from joining the fun. An extensive F.A.Q. was posted to Dead by Daylight's website to outline the new feature and how it will integrate with systems already present in the game.

Crossplay is a complex feature to include, and it does come with some significant caveats to the multiplayer experience. For instance, console players still will not be able to use the in-game chat offered to PC gamers and console-exclusive content will still be barred from players on different consoles. Perhaps most worryingly, when updates come to the game in the future, consoles will only be able to do crossplay with consoles that are running the same version of the game that they are. Therefore, if an update comes to PC first, PC players won't be able to play with anyone on consoles until the update comes to them, too.

Despite these issues, this is still big news for fans. Dedicated multiplayer games like Dead by Daylight are only improved by broadening the number of gamers who get to play together. Dead by Daylight may be a terrifying experience, but it is still a social one, and giving more players a chance to get scared out of their wits together is an ideal way to improve the game.
