As the enemy of the Fantastic Four and ruler of Latveria, Marvel Comics’ Doctor Doom is no stranger to absolute power. But when Victor got his hands on the might of Galactus, an entire cosmos paid the ultimate price. And if it weren’t for another universe's Doctor Doom, the Earth would have been next.

Victor Von Doom has always been his own greatest obstacle, and that’s even more true when faced with a counterpart from another universe. Fans have seen time and again that there’s only ever room enough for one Doctor Doom, and it frequently comes down to which is the most powerful. But it is Marvel Two-In-One #4 by Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti that introduces fans to a Doctor Doom with all the power of Galactus - and it’s not a pleasant sight.

As the Thing and the Human Torch travel the Multiverse searching for their version of the Richards Family, they find themselves in a familiar world with one surprising difference: the Fantastic Four failed against Galactus. As Ben and Johnny learn more about this universe’s history, they discover that upon Galactus’ initial arrival, this universe’s version of the Thing was instantly killed. This then led to a grief-stricken Reed Richards futilely launching a one-man assault on the cosmic entity before Doctor Doom managed to place his consciousness in Galactus’ body and leave the Earth. Unfortunately, in any universe, Doom’s hunger for power knows no bounds and he eventually devours this entire alternate universe – save for the Earth.

But when Doom returns, it takes all of the Earth’s remaining heroes, along with Earth-616’s Thing, Human Torch, and the Infamous Iron Man Victor Von Doom, to abate his hunger by replacing his mind with that of one Emma Frost. This Galactus-fusion may have been an alternate version of Victor but his actions here still feel incredibly within character for Doom-proper. After all, Victor Von Doom gaining ultimate power is something that Marvel fans have seen time and again. And, unfortunately for Doom, he’s been his own downfall every single time he has attained the godhood he so desperately seeks.

While Doom may be lifelong foes with Mister Fantastic, at the end of the day, Victor will always be his own worst enemy. Far too often, his ego has led to sheer ruin, and in this universe, it led to the death of all life in the universe outside of the Earth itself. Even in the most literal sense, Doom will always defeat Doom, as it took the aid of his Earth-616 counterpart to truly bring his madness to an end and restore the universe that Doom destroyed.

Although his cosmic power nearly consumed him, Doctor Doom’s true downfall was his own doing. As the arch-foe of the Fantastic Four, he’s come close to universal domination more times than fans can count. But much like Galactus, in the end, Marvel Comics’ Doctor Doom just can’t help his hunger for power - and that’s his greatest weakness.
