The Super Sons are getting the band back together so that Robin, Superboy and the entire DC Universe can head back to school. DC has revealed a new anthology that promises the return of some fan-favorite characters for a hilarious send off to summer just in time for first period.

Of all the changes to the DCU during its "Rebirth" period, one of the most beloved things to come out of the revamp was Super Sons, a team-up comic featuring Batman's son, Damian Wayne, and Superman's son, Jon Kent. While the two started their partnership off on rocky grounds, Robin and Superboy became good friends and even better crime fighting partners. Despite the critical and fan acclaim of the title, the Super Sons' time to shine was over once Jon Kent was aged several years, later taking over for his father as Earth's Superman.

While Jon and Damian are still friends, there's still a sizable audience that longs to see more adventures of the Super Sons. And those fans are getting exactly what they want thanks to a new anthology coming from DC. The publisher announced that just as summer winds down, they'll be releasing DC's Saved By the Belle Reve #1. The Super Sons will make their triumphant return in a brand new story written by Peter Tomasi and illustrated by Max Raynor. Robin and Superboy aren't the only fan-favorites getting more time in the spotlight as DC's described the one-shot anthology as a "Who’s Who of creators and characters you’ve been asking to see more of!" Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher, Karl Kerschl, and Msassykare all returning to create a new Gotham Academy story while Art Baltazar and Franco bring a new Tiny Titans tale to eager readers.

DC clearly knows what they’re doing with this anthology. Including characters like the Super Sons and the Gotham Academy cast is a chance to provide readers with some of the most in-demand fan-favorites in one location. While fans would no doubt prefer to see these protagonists return in their own ongoing titles, a featured story is better than nothing. In fact, an anthology filled with beloved heroes may bode well for the long-absent favorites.

While it’s hard to predict what sorts of characters and stories are going to become preferred among the fans, it’s usually pretty obvious when something has resonated with readers. Things like Super Sons and Gotham Academy were fun alternatives to the standard superhero stories of the DC Universe. Unfortunately, love from fans doesn’t always guarantee success. However, enough noise can show publishers that a demand exists for fan-favorites, and with enough luck, things like DC's new anthology can bring readers exactly what they've been waiting for. Now does that mean with enough sales that fans might see more of their beloved stories? Not exactly. But, the book does provide an opportunity to prove that a market still exists for these characters. Those desperate to see more of Robin and Superboy as the Super Sons should consider picking up a copy of DC’s Saved by the Belle Reve #1.
