The original three core DCEU heroes Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman get an impressive cartoon makeover in this piece of fan art. The DC Extended Universe first began in 2013 with Man of Steel, Zack Snyder's gritty take on Superman's (Henry Cavill) origin story. While the franchise seemed to start off slow by focusing on one hero, Snyder kicked things into high gear three years later with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which watched Superman and Batman (Ben Affleck) cross paths for the first time on the big screen. It also introduced Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman and featured an epic team-up between all three DC heroes.

Though the DCEU was first intended as DC's response to Marvel's connected universe, it soon became apparent that it couldn't follow directly in the MCU's footsteps. As a result, the DCEU began to transition into its own thing. Following Snyder's exit as a result of a family tragedy and the disappointing response to 2017's Justice League, DC shifted away from connected storylines and began to focus more on solid standalone efforts. Its most recent installment, Wonder Woman 1984, just debuted a few weeks ago.

Though the DCEU looks rather different now, the trio of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman remain key parts of the franchise's history. Artist datrinti decided to take the live-action heroes and turn them into cartoons, almost like they are a part of DC's beloved animated films. At the same time, this art gives each character a realistic slant, making for a truly impressive piece. Check it out below.

While Wonder Woman will return for a third solo film, Batman and Superman's DCEU futures remain uncertain. Both Cavill and Affleck appeared to exit the franchise in recent years, but developments from the past few months have hinted at returns. Cavill was rumored to cameo in various DCEU films, while Affleck will bring back his Batman for The Flash. Whether he could appear in future projects remains to be seen.

Even if Batman and Superman fade from the DCEU over the next few years, fans will always remember how they helped bring the universe to life. Though Batman v Superman was a polarizing movie, it at least gave audiences the thrill of seeing the two titular heroes battle Doomsday alongside Wonder Woman. Fans will get to see even more team-up action in Zack Snyder's Justice League in March. DC's biggest heroes have come together on the big screen, and that alone is a dream come true.
