Superheroes have a lot on their plate. From mastering their powers to saving the world and fighting dangerous villains, they rarely ever get a true break. The DCEU is no exception in this area. It's been around since 2013 and its heroes have already faced multiple threats, both mythological and earthly in origin.

Despite their packed schedules, even superheroes have the right to form romantic relationships - sometimes with their fellow heroes, sometimes with non-powered people. Those romances don't always end well, either because death steps in the way or the two people simply aren't compatible. Whatever the case, some DCEU relationships outstayed their welcome while others deserved to last longer.

Ended Too Soon: Batman & Wonder Woman

Batman V Superman Wonder Woman Diana Prince Bruce Wayne

Batman and Wonder Woman are close in the comics, and on more than one occasion, it looked like they could be more than friends. Batman even kissed Wonder Woman in the comics. The DCEU versions of the beloved characters also have strong chemistry between them - visible from the first moment they met.

They became good friends but even though they flirted, they never got together. And the chance for them to do so is now over, considering Robert Pattinson will be playing the new Batman instead of Ben Affleck.

Didn't End Soon Enough: Joker & Harley Quinn

Even though it was refreshing to finally see the couple in a live-action movie, their romance leaves a lot to be desired. Joker abuses Harley in the comics, he doesn't take her seriously and even lets her take the blame for some of his crimes.

Even though the DCEU films don't show all of this, it still comes as a welcomed relief when Harley finally dumps Joker at the beginning of Birds of Prey (2019).

Ended Too Soon: Wonder Woman & Steve Trevor

Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor get romantic

With the exception of Diana's brief flirtation with Bruce Wayne, she's mostly been alone in the DCEU. This might change in her second solo movie if Steve Trevor is truly back and it isn't just a trick. But for now, Diana still believes that she lost the man she loved many years ago.

They cared about one another and fought side by side, but their time together was cut short when Steve sacrificed his life during World War One.

Didn't End Soon Enough: Orm & Mera

Mera Aquaman and Orm

As will all comic book fans know, Mera and Arthur Curry - aka Aquaman - belong together. But Arthur's half-brother Orm didn't get the memo and he still courted Mera.

These two were betrothed but Mera never cared about Orm in this way - and after she met Arthur and they grew closer, any chance at a relationship between Mera and Orm was definitely over. Unfortunately, Orm refused to take the hint which led to some pretty unpleasant moments.

Ended Too Soon: Superman & Lois Lane

Superman carries Lois Lane in his arms

Luckily, these two are now back together but there was a time when Lois believed that Clark Kent was dead. That was devastating for her since she and Clark were extremely close, and he even planned to ask for her hand in marriage.

Superman died during the events of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) but his fellow superheroes brought him back in Justice League (2017). And it was Lois of all people who managed to bring the confused Superman back to his senses.

Ended Too Soon: Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy

The problem with this couple is that it never even got the chance to appear in the DCEU. Harley mentions Ivy at the beginning of Birds of Prey but they've already broken up by this time. Harley then hints at the fact that Ivy broke her heart which might mean she's not entirely over the break-up. Maybe there's a chance for the two women to get together?

Either way, it's a shame the DCEU hasn't shown more of their romance. Harley and Ivy have a much healthier and supportive relationship in the comics and the animated TV series shows just how good they are together.

Ended Too Soon: Tom Curry & Atlanna

Atlanna says goodbye to young Arthur in Aquaman

This couple is a bit similar to Lois Lane and Superman - they were also forced to separate but got back together in the end. But unlike with Lois and Clark, Tom's and Atlanna's separation lasted much longer. Atlanna met Tom, they fell in love and had a son together.

But she then had to go back to the sea and it was unclear when - if at all - Tom would meet her again. They never stopped loving each other and finally reunited when their son Arthur discovered his true heritage and helped free his mother from her underwater prison.

Ended Too Soon: Martha Kent & Jonathan Kent

Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent work side by side in Man of Steel

This couple never got as much attention as they would deserve. Especially since Jonathan died in the first film of the DCEU, Man of Steel (2013). But from what is known of their relationship, it's safe to assume that they were a good match.

Martha misses her husband very much after his death and while they were together, they managed to raise an alien baby - which couldn't have been an easy task. Not every couple would handle something like this but Martha and Jonathan did which speaks volumes about the strength of their marriage.
