DC Comics has had an established multiverse for decades now, and bringing this concept to the DCEU could really benefit the franchise. Using the multiverse is something that hasn't been seen much in the genre of comic book movies, aside from the notable Arrowverse crossover event, which included a surprise cameo from the DCEU's Flash, Ezra Miller. Allowing multiple versions of the same character to exist simultaneously proves that DC and Warner Bros understand now that they don't have to try and create one cohesive universe, but instead can create a fleshed-out multiverse that provides fans with content that they would have never had otherwise.

Back in August of 2020, DC Fandome gave fans a selection of news, and one of the biggest reveals was the fact that The Flash movie would completely establish a DC film multiverse, which would push forward the ability to be able to see multiple actors portraying different versions of the same character across different mediums. This news explains why Ben Affleck can return to portray Bruce Wayne in Zack Snyder's Justice League, while at the same time, Robert Pattinson can appear as the Caped Crusader in The Batman, and Michael Keaton can even reprise the role in The Flash.

While we have seen the multiverse throughout the Arrowverse, it was quite contained to just those shows. The Crisis on Infinite Earths event was when they actually started to plant the seeds of all DC properties existing within the same multiverse, from current movies and TV shows, all the way back to classic movies and shows that introduced the beloved characters to so many people. By doing this, DC has put themselves in a clever position, because it enables both creativity and fanservice - as evidence with the return of Michael Keaton as Batman. This could be a stroke of genius, as it allows more flexibility and variety from further DCEU installments. If the viewer is not a fan of one of the versions of the character they are presented with, there are other options that can satisfy their expectations. This completely changes the conversation surrounding the likes of Superman and Batman, as it goes from talking about who is the best version of a character overall, to talking about who is the best version of a character currently.

The multiverse also opens the door to fix some of the problems that the DCEU has been presented with. Through the adaptation of Flashpoint in The Flash, the DCEU is going to be able to rewrite some of its own history thanks to both the multiverse and time travel. When it comes down to it, it works out very simply: have Flash make some minuscule change to the past, which causes changes to the future. These changes can consist of recasting specific characters, or even making entire movies not exist on that earth anymore. DC is presented with so much opportunity because of this choice, and not only does this opportunity pave the way for the future, it also can help repair missteps while still respecting the nostalgia of the past.

There are so many possible directions that the future of the DCEU can go, and it is safe to say that the multiverse is at the center of it. With something this huge playing such a large role in these upcoming films, it truly is impossible to predict what will come next. Although, it's clear that DC and Warner Bros are moving forward in a way that will help them build a catalog of content that is extremely unique.
