Spoilers ahead for the Black Adam post-credits sceneDCEU fans take to social media to ferociously defend Amy Adams as Lois Lane amid a debate over potentially recasting her for Man of Steel 2. After the release of Black Adam last week, which gained a lot of attention for its post-credits scene featuring the Man of Steel, it has been confirmed that Henry Cavill is returning to play Superman in future DCEU projects. This could mean a sequel film is in the works for the British actor, and although no further details have yet been announced, fans have been overjoyed at the return of Cavill in this iconic role.

However, resigning its Superman after years in limbo doesn't necessarily mean there won't be further shakeups, as the franchise is very much in transition. With the studio now under new leadership determined to make an MCU-esque ten-year plan for DCEU movies, it has been unclear to fans what this will mean for the continuity generated thus far. Adams made her first appearance as Lois Lane back in 2013's Man of Steel, and the character played a big role in Superman’s narrative arc in Batman vs. Superman and Justice League, but outside of Zack Snyder's Justice League, she now hasn't played the role in five years.

While some have used Cavill's return to suggest the DCEU should find a new Lois, fans have stepped up to defend Adams in the role of Clark Kent’s one true love, claiming that there is no Man of Steel 2 without her. Some point out that the debate about replacing her with a younger actor could be interpreted as an ageist attack on Adams, who has just turned 48. Others are just appreciative of her performance and suggest that those calling for a recast weren't actually fans of the franchise in the first place.

Does Henry Cavill's Superman Return Mean Adams' Lois Is Back Too?

Lois Lane under an umbrella

Adams previously commented that, as much as she would love to, she isn’t expecting to play Lois again, as Warner Bros. initially seemed to be moving away from Cavill’s version of Superman. However, with the actor’s return now announced, this could potentially open the door for Adams to join him. While this has not been confirmed, it’s clear from the social media uproar at the very thought of her being replaced that audiences would love to see Adams back in Man of Steel 2, particularly because Cavill is already getting a second chance to reprise the role in a new interpretation.

With the future of the DCEU unclear, there are many directions that Cavill’s Superman could be going in, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will follow on from 2017's Justice League. With that in mind, it could be questioned whether the Superman seen in the Black Adam post-credits scene is even the same hero from previous DCEU movies. Many other actors have been considered to play Lois Lane in the past, and a soft-reboot of Superman could lead to Adams stepping down and someone else taking her place in Man of Steel 2. Although fans seem to be in disagreement with this, all plans are currently in the dark.
