The DC Extended Universe has had a lot of ups and downs over the past few years. While it got off to a bit of a rough start, more recent movies have started to pick up steam and give fans the experiences they were looking for from them.
That being said, the more movies that start to exist in a shared cinematic universe of any kind, the more plot holes tend to pop up. The DCEU certainly has its fair share of these narrative issues. Some of them have only gotten more blatant as time has gone on, more movies have been added to the timeline and at least one has been remade.
Batman Seems Like A Bad Detective
There are a few things that make Batman who he is. Naturally, the first thing many people think of is his incredible array of gadgets and vehicles. And of course, he's a highly respected hand-to-hand combatant.
But a big one is the fact that he's the world's greatest detective. In the DCEU, that element is supposedly there but time and time again that version of Batman seems to be a step behind everyone else.
How Aquaman And Mera Got Out Of The Sahara
The Aquaman movie focused on the titular character claiming his rightful spot as the leader of Atlantis. Getting there was no easy journey as he and his new ally Mera had to go on a worldwide quest.
They ended up in the fallen Kingdom of the Deserters in the Sahara Desert where they found a clue that leads them to Sicily, Italy. There was never any explanation given as to how they got from one place to the other so quickly. It was a jarring shift in scenery, to say the least.
Nobody Questions Clark Kent's Return
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice took some interesting twists and turns along the way. That included the debut of a very different version of Doomsday, though the monstrous DC villain was still responsible for the death of Superman.
Then in Justice League, Superman returned to the land of the living and helped defeat Darkseid. But no one really seemed to question why or how Clark Kent also came back to life. Everyone just sort of seemed to accept it.
The Truth Of The Knightmares
Batman decided to create the Justice League after experiencing the Knightmares, disturbing visions of a future ruled by Darkseid. They were extremely motivating experiences that, without question, inspired Batman to actually work with other people for once.
The visions themselves are a bit of a plot hole, now. Because the DCEU is unlikely to pursue any aspect of that story in the future, the visions have become a bit of a misdirect. The truth of the Knightmares may never be known.
Aquaman Knowing Batman's Secret Identity
When Batman starts putting his team together, he approaches Aquaman in a remote fishing village. He apparently shows up there on a semi-regular basis and has been doing so for many years.
Aquaman quickly makes it clear quite that he knows Bruce Wayne is Batman and has no problem pointing this out in front of crowds. How Aquaman, of all people, is privy to such a guarded secret is never explained on any substantive level.
How Zeus Created Themyscira & Diana
The whole mythology around the creation of the Amazons is steeped in stories of the Greek pantheon. Specifically, Amazonian legends indicate that Zeus created the island of Themyscira for them with his dying breath.
That creates a bit of a plot hole in Wonder Woman's birth. Diana's mother states that she prayed to Zeus for a child, and he gave her Diana. But by the time that happened, Zeus had supposedly died after creating Themyscira. It's more than a little confusing.
Mera's Inconsistent Accent
The recent launch of Zack Snyder's cut of the terrible Justice League movie certainly redeemed it to an extent. Snyder actually managed to cobble together a coherent vision that wasn't upsetting to watch.
That doesn't mean it was perfect, of course. In Zack Snyder's Justice League, Mera's role was greatly increased though she inexplicably has a British accent. It didn't appear in the original cut, and she doesn't have it in Aquaman which is set after the events of Justice League.
Everyone Must Know Wonder Woman's Identity By Now
Secret identities play a huge role in the lives of superheroes. These alter egos protect their friends and families while also giving them a shot at finding a bit of normalcy when not fighting lunatics and monsters.
At this point, though, the general public has to be aware of Wonder Woman's identity. She has not done a particularly great job of hiding it, and it seems to serve little purpose at this point. Trying to maintain it is an exercise in futility.
Lex Luthor Getting Out Of Arkham
Arkham Asylum is not a place any rational person would want to work at. It's quite literally filled with the worst and most dangerous villains Batman has ever faced. And in the DCEU, that includes Lex Luthor.
Luthor's defeat in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice resulted in his imprisonment in Arkham. But the post-credits scene in Justice League showed him out and about, with zero explanation provided of how he made his escape, or why Batman wasn't after him.
Vulko Breathing Out Of The Water
Atlanteans spend their entire lives in the oceans of the world, mainly because they need to breathe water to survive. But royal-born Atlanteans like Aquaman and Mera also have the ability to breathe on land.
But it's made quite clear that Aquaman's mentor and key supporter, Vulko, can also breathe on land despite not being royal born. If there's a reason for this, it will hopefully come up in the sequel.
