A new preview for DC vs. Vampires shows the Justice League’s battle against the undead. The first issue comes just days before Halloween, giving fans a fun look at what it would be like for DC’s greatest superheroes to fight bloodthirsty monsters.
Over the years, the Justice League has collectively fought alien tyrants, mythical gods, and even movie monsters. The DC Universe has seen zombie versions of heroes in stories such as DCeased and Blackest Night, and it’s possible that fans will soon witness them become vampires. As special issues for the Halloween season release such as Batman: The Long Halloween Special, the upcoming DC vs. Vampires will surpass autumn as a 12-issue limited series.
In a new cover preview released by DC Comics, DC vs. Vampires #1 will cross over into another genre as the DC Universe encounters a league of horrors. Featuring a story written by James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg with art by Otto Schmidt, the limited series’ creative team is showing promise for such a thrilling premise. Unlike Darkseid or Despero, these antagonists have no interest in ruling the world. Instead, they want to convert humanity to join their vampire army. Secretly living in the shadows for generations, they have finally been revealed and have no reason to keep quiet.
As depicted on the cover, Batman fights the surrounding vampire army alongside Green Arrow, desperate to get the upper hand. The League is used to fighting villains with a plan, but the chaotic force of vampires could prove to be a formidable threat. With the released preview claiming that the DC Universe is about to be transformed, there is potential for many heroes to fall prey to the undead monsters. As teased by the first issue’s cover, it wouldn’t be the first time that Batman became a vampire. If the Emerald Archer and the Dark Knight are among the first Leaguers to go, then the two super-powerless heroes could inherit special abilities to use against their friends. Still, it would be a less threatening circumstance than if Superman or Martian Manhunter lost a fight with the undead.
However, it’s worth noting that these vampires are still struggling to a degree to take down Batman and Green Arrow. Resorting to a dagger and arrows, the two superheroes seem to pose some challenge, even without their fellow League members providing backup. If these vampires were accurate to movie depictions, they should be able to levitate or move too quickly for the heroes to keep up. On the cover, the vampires effectively look like werewolves, only utilizing brute force. DC vs. Vampires #1 kicks off the 12-issue limited series in print and digital on Tuesday, October 27.
