DC Universe has brought a whole host of comic book characters to the screen with their live-action take on Stargirl. The series, which has also been picked up by the CW, focuses on Courtney Whitmore as she discovers the cosmic staff and embraces her heroic side.
In addition to Courtney as the titular superhero, there's a whole new generation of heroes battling the generation of villains that came before them. The audience will find plenty of characters to identify with in this diverse group. Those with an interest in astrology might be interested in seeing which character matches up with their own zodiac sign.
Updated on September 19th, 2022 by Amanda Bruce: As Stargirl has transferred fully from DC Universe to the CW for its second and third seasons, it’s added more heroes and villains to the mix. The series has also been able to expand the stories of those characters who didn’t get much screen time in the first season. As Stargirl has been able to explore more character stories, fans have been able to find more favorites among the cast as well as more characters they might identify with.
Aries: Rick And Paula
As the first sign in the zodiac, Aries is often seen as "the youngest," which typically means the least mature. In Rick's case, that translates to the most impulsive. Rick is incredibly confident and brave when he understands the abilities he's being given. He's ready to take on the bad guys and avenge his parents. Unfortunately, with his confidence and bravery comes his tendency to ignore plans and charge ahead recklessly.
Like Rick, Paula has a tendency to jump into situations without fully weighing the consequences of her actions. She’s used to being able to intimidate or fight her way out of any situation. She’s also used to taking an active role in any situation, not hanging out in a small town and waiting to see how things play out. That passion and need for action is what makes Paula an Aries like Rick.
Taurus: Henry Jr.
Henry is an interesting character because he's one of the few where the audience truly sees two very different sides of him. Yolanda thanks he's the worst because of what happened while they were dating. Henry does show himself to be a bully as a result of his unhappiness, but he also shows that he ultimately wants to do the right thing.
Henry is simply so used to doing things his father's way that he doesn't want to give up the security and stability being his father's son originally offers. That need for stability is very much a Taurus trait. So is Henry's stubborn nature.
Gemini: Barbara And Larry
As a kid, Barbara couldn't wait to leave her small town life behind. Once she has a daughter of her own, however, that small town life and its nostalgia calls to her. Like a lot of Geminis, Barbara could fit in anywhere she chooses. She's able to adapt to change while still drawing from her past experiences. Barbara is also incredibly social and well-liked — even by the villains in town.
It might be surprising to think of Larry Crock as similar to Barbara. After all, Barbara tries her best to always do the right thing and Larry seems to always be on the verge of doing the worst things. Like Barbara though, Larry can be quite charming when he wants to be. He’s ready to make friends and blend in even more than his wife, Paula.
Cancer: Yolanda
Yolanda is one of the best friends anyone could have — as long as they can keep her. Because she's very in tune with her emotions, if someone hurts her, she holds a grudge. Case in point: Henry and Cindy.
As a result of these emotions, Yolanda can be very empathetic, making her very protective of those she's close to. Getting close to her, however, can be difficult, as she's also very cautious as to who she lets in, as fans see when Courtney first approaches her.
Leo: Sylvester
He might not appear in the series much, but Sylvester's presence is often felt. Starman is the entire reason Courtney becomes a superhero in the first place, and his legacy is a big one.
Reading between the lines of Pat's stories about the hero, it's clear Starman loves to be the one at the center of the party — just like a Leo. It doesn't matter if it's an actual party or a fight with a bunch of supervillains. That idea continues when he becomes a regular in Season 3 as he struggles to adjust to not being the center of attention and the main hero in Blue Valley.
Virgo: Pat
Virgos are often the "mom friend" of their group. They plan for everything, keep checklists, and try to have the right tools for any situation.
That's exactly Pat's role as a relatable Virgo when it comes to the superheroes — and the kids — in his life. He's always been the sidekick, but he's the one who has done the research and knows how to plan out an attack on the villains in Blue Valley. Pat even sets up training sessions for the teens he's mentoring.
Libra: Courtney And Jennie
Though her impulsive nature might make her seem more in line with an Aries, Courtney is someone who is all about fairness. Balance is what a Libra tends to focus on. Courtney initially struggled to make her superhero and school lives balance each other out, but she is still trying to make sure Blue Valley has a level playing field. She encourages her friends to learn how to use their new gifts, believes that there is good in even the school bullies, and tries to get justice for those who have been wronged.
One of the reasons that Jennie and Courtney initially butt heads is because they are so much alike. Courtney keeps the belongings of the original JSA out of respect for them. Jennie wants the lantern back because it’s her father’s. Like Courtney, Jennie has a strong sense of justice. She also has a need to please, which can be a part of the way Libras charm others, not unlike Geminis as well.
Scorpio: Jordan
Jordan, aka Icicle, appears to be the true Big Bad of the series. Though Brainwave is arguably more powerful, Icicle is the one doing most of the damage in the show.
He's also incredibly mysterious but very good at unraveling the mysteries around him. Jordan plays his cards close to the vest like any Scorpio would, but he also makes sure to investigate those around him that pique his interest, like Barbara.
Sagittarius: Henry Sr.
When a character's supervillain name is Brainwave, they've obviously got to be pretty smart. One of the traits of a Sagittarius is that they love to learn.
Of course, in all that acquiring of knowledge, Brainwave has come to despise most of humanity for their dark thoughts. He's not shy about his disdain for most of the people around him, keeping his comments relatively straightforward and not bothering with any tact.
Capricorn: Cindy And Artemis
Ambitious and hardworking, Capricorns never give up on a goal. Cindy might be both the most ambitious and hardworking character in the series. She does every task set to her by her supervillain of a father. Cindy trains hard to master her craft. All she wants in return is a seat at the table and a chance to prove herself against Stargirl. When she can't have that, she takes the opportunity to take on Courtney herself. It goes badly, but Cindy doesn't give up, wanting to try again. Cindy's dream eventually shifts to working alongside Courtney and making herself a better person than her father.
Just as Courtney and Jennie butt heads because they’re so similar, so do Artemis and Cindy. Cindy sees Artemis as beneath her, but Artemis sees herself as just as capable as Cindy. While Cindy tries to prove herself beyond what her father made her, Artemis wants to prove herself as worthy of her parents’ legacy. She’s ambitious in different areas than Cindy, playing on the boys’ teams at school, for example. Both young women ultimately want to be a part of the JSA though as their ultimate goal, and they’ll both do anything to achieve it.
Aquarius: Mike
Though he's the youngest character in the series and doesn't learn about the superheroes around him until the end of the first season, Mike fits right in. Like any Aquarius, he's an outside-the-box thinker.
Throughout the first season, Mike is constantly finding ways to negotiate with his dad and stepmom for what he wants and coming up with creative ideas for projects at the last minute. He continues to find his own way to work around the JSA in Seasons 2 and 3, wanting to help, but not really being allowed to be on the team.
Pisces: Beth And Cameron
Thanks to her pursuit of knowledge and her very scheduled life, some might think of Beth as a Sagittarius or a Virgo. But Pisces is a better fit for her. The sign of the fish is usually associated with daydreamers and spiritualists. While Beth's head is on her shoulders instead of in the clouds, she finds herself most at peace when chatting with "Chuck" in Dr. Mid-Nite's goggles. She's compassionate and cares for the people around her no matter how much they might push her away.
Cameron and Beth don’t have much in common at first glance. While Beth exemplifies the more emotional and empathetic side of the Pisces, Cameron exemplifies the more creative side. He’s very focused on expressing himself through art, and when he doesn’t have that as an outlet in the third season, he becomes more in touch with his emotions instead, especially anger.
