James Gunn teases that more Vertigo-based characters are joining the new DC Universe. As the DCEU is coming to an end after a decade, DC Studios is setting up a new DC Universe. With Gunn and Safran as the co-CEOs of DC Studios, the duo is crafting a new interconnected franchise. In late January, DC Studios presented several new DC Universe movies and TV shows that are currently in the works. While Chapter 1, "Gods and Monsters," will reveal more later in the year, DC Studios are keeping themselves busy for the next few years. One of the projects announced was a new Swamp Thing movie that will explore the dark origin story of the titular character. Logan director James Mangold is currently in talks for the Swamp Thing reboot.

When asked if there will be more Vertigo characters, Gunn stressed they are dealing with a "couple potential things" for the DC Universe. However, Gunn wouldn't elaborate on what characters may or may not appear from the Vertigo imprint.

Which Vertigo Characters Are Likely To Join The DC Universe

DC's Swamp-Thing and The Justice League Dark

Vertigo properties have been and continue to be part of DC's live-action library to this day. Currently, Netflix has The Sandman TV show, which was renewed for additional episodes in 2022. Sweet Tooth season 2 is on its way after getting picked up by the streaming service for another season. Additionally, Netflix is getting a third Vertigo-based series, this time from Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti. After being developed for HBO Max, Dead Boy Detectives is moving to Netflix, with season 1 currently filming.

With so many Vertigo projects already on the air, time will tell how the new DC Universe affects them. At this point, they will likely continue to exist as Elseworlds properties. Unless Gunn incorporates them, the DC Universe will introduce its own line-up of Vertigo characters. Since Swamp Thing is on his way, it wouldn't be shocking if Constantine is a character they prioritize for the DC Universe. With reports about Keanu Reeves' Constantine 2 not necessarily being a sure thing, the Hellblazer may be primed for Gunn's franchise instead.

Gunn is known for wanting to explore more obscure characters and stories outside of the A-listers. That could bode well for something like Vertigo's The Books of Magic and Fables in Gunn's DC Universe. Hopefully, as 2023 goes on, Gunn will reveal what Vertigo characters are taking part in his DC Universe sooner rather than later.
