DC Universe's Swamp Thing TV show casts Crystal Reed in the role of Abby Arcane. Last year, DC Entertainment announced they were planning to launch their own streaming service with original content to rival other streamers like Netflix and Hulu. As part of the new service, titled DC Universe and set to launch later this month, DC will release television series exclusive to subscribers. Young Justice: Outsiders, Titans, Doom Patrol, a Harley Quinn animated series and Swamp Thing are all confirmed to release on DC Universe, premiering over the coming months and throughout 2019.

While Titans will debut as early as October, Swamp Thing is still in the early stages of pre-production. Though it's been confirmed that Underworld creator Len Wiseman will direct the pilot, little else is known about the Swamp Thing TV show. So far, it's been confirmed the series doesn't take place in the same universe as Titans and Doom Patrol. Further, character descriptions indicated Swamp Thing will stay true to the main characters from the comics - and now one of those roles has been cast.

Deadline is reporting that Crystal Reed (Gotham, Teen Wolf) has been cast in the lead role of Abby Arcane, who is described as "smart and caring" with a "strong sense of empathy." Swamp Thing will follow Arcane, a CDC doctor who returns to her hometown in Louisiana when a deadly virus stems from a swamp with "mystical and terrifying secrets." While there, she'll meet scientist Alec Holland - the yet-to-be cast male lead and Swamp Thing himself - and fall deeper into "the world of horror and supernatural" as she learns about the titular creature.

Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson created the comic book property on which Swamp Thing is based, while the TV show will be written by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman, and produced by James Wan's Atomic Monster along with Warner Bros. TV. For her part, Reed first rose to prominence on MTV's supernatural drama Teen Wolf, in which she starred as Allison Argent, though she departed in the back half of season 3. Most recently, she appeared in fellow DC Comics television series Gotham, on which she played Sofia Falcone in season 4.

As such, Reed has plenty of experience with both supernatural dramas and comic book properties, making her an excellent choice for the lead role of Abby Arcane in Swamp Thing. Reed's Allison was the female lead of Teen Wolf for the first three seasons, and her character's relationship with Tyler Posey's Scott McCall served as the show's heart. Since Swamp Thing will similarly center on Abby and Alec's relationship and how that intersects with the storyline pertaining to the swamp and its mystical properties, the DC Universe drama is certainly in Reed's wheelhouse.

Of course, as with any other comic book property, the Swamp Thing TV show will be tasked with honoring its source material and it remains to be seen whether DC Universe's series will be a hit with comic fans and casual viewers alike. Still, once Swamp Thing casts Alec Holland, fans will at least have a better idea of what to expect from the core duo. Plus, now that casting is underway on the show, more news will arrive before Swamp Thing starts filming later this year. Though fans will still need to wait until 2019 for the show to premiere, a first trailer should offer a first look at the Swamp Thing TV show and a glimpse of Reed in the role of Abby Arcane.
