Although the DCEU’s Suicide Squad is mostly remembered for being a misfire that didn’t capitalize on the edgy aspect it was shooting for, there’s no doubt the film has a lot of fans. It’s understandable, too, seeing as the movie can be enjoyed if not taken seriously.

Fans also like how Suicide Squad brought in the format of a dysfunctional team filled with contrasting members, combining that with comedic material. There’s more where that comes from, as you can find plenty of other movies that might even be better at delivering this form of entertainment.

Fantastic Four (2005)

The Fantastic Four stand together to fight

A team of scientists meet an accident in space with a cosmic cloud, which grants them all unique superpowers. Unfortunately, it brings out the worst in their nemesis, Victor von Doom, who begins plans for domination. It takes the quintet to band together and become the Fantastic Four to stop Doom.

It really doesn’t deserve the bad press it gets, as Fantastic Four has always been supposed to be a funnier comic book team. The film delivers laughs aplenty, and a  group whose character development actually works well. Even the effects have aged well, making this a surefire entertainer.

Fast Five (2011)

Dominic Toretto assembles the ultimate team to take down a drug lord in Brazil and make off with millions of dollars. With special agent Luke Hobbs hot on his tail, though, this turns out to be a much tougher challenge than anticipated.

Another team-based movie, but one where the contrasting personalities really work as well as one would want. Filled with over-the-top action and racing sequences that fans of the series adore, Fast Five is also a smart film that finely balances the effects and dialogue.

The Green Hornet (2011)

Seth Rogen and Jay Chou tinted green in The Green Hornet

A clueless man accidentally ends up becoming a vigilante, along with procuring a trusted partner, donning the persona of The Green Hornet. Since he’s way out of his league with the criminals of the city, a whole lot of pratfalls accompany his mission.

It’s not the best superhero film out there, but it does align with Suicide Squad’s brand of edginess. Pretty funny and even brilliant in places, The Green Hornet is great for simple entertainment purposes. The action sequences are far from perfect, but that’s what brings the comedic aspect.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Hulk Thor Valkyrie and Loki preparing for the final battle in Ragnarok

The death of Thor's father brings back his long-sealed sister to Asgard, who banishes the hero and his brother to a planet filled with gladiators. After reuniting with The Hulk, Thor assembles a team to return to Asgard and claim the throne from his evil sister.

This is a film that brings in the fun aspect of things in more ways than one, as Thor: Ragnarok is both a hilarious and thrilling romp. It redesigns the series completely, bringing a much more interesting Thor and quirky supporting characters who make every scene a riot.

The World's End (2013)

Five childhood friends with different personalities reunite after several years. When they believe their personal problems can’t get worse, it turns out they’re right in the middle of an alien invasion that interrupts their bar-hopping plans.

Even if you know what you’re getting into, The World’s End will still end up being a surprise. The film’s tone changes completely halfway through, as it turns into an epic science fiction comedy. It’s all kinds of chaotic, which serves to make the crazy stuff turn out to be even funnier. Yet, there’s also a heartwarming story to unfold here between this group of friends.

Hancock (2008)

A centuries’ old superhero is hated by the world due to his careless antics. After saving the life of a PR specialist, Hancock is convinced into turning over a new leaf. Unfortunately, this brings back painful old memories he didn’t realize he had.

This might be the original good-for-nothing superhero film that has become quite a popular style, something Suicide Squad also tried to emulate. In Hancock’s case, the funny portions aren’t as striking as the emotional ones, as the story manages to turn a reckless superhero into a responsible one.

Deadpool 2 (2018)

Deadpool 2 Cable carrying Wade Wilson

The death of his girlfriend makes Deadpool have a death wish, which can’t come true due to his immortality. However, when he stumbles across a time traveller attempting to kill a child, Deadpool finds a new purpose in life.

This kind of total chaos and insanity in action is just what Suicide Squad fans will love, with Deadpool 2 even bringing a hilarious interpretation of a makeshift team. It’s so crazy that you might even lose track of the plot, although the lead character’s antics ensure an entertaining watch regardless of what happens.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003)

Will and Jack on the ship in Curse of the Black Pearl

An undead crew of pirates aboard the cursed Black Pearl ship abduct the governor’s daughter, Elizabeth Swann. Out of circumstance, Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner become a team as they go on a journey to rescue Elizabeth.

Even before crazy team-ups were a thing, Pirates of the Caribbean brought this out from its leads, who make for a highly entertaining act. The action implements the theme of the curse the plot revolves around, and the constant flip-flops in allegiance between pirates keeps the viewer invested right till the end.

Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey (2020)

After getting dumped by The Joker, Harley Quinn is down on her luck. Meanwhile, the shift in power among the gangsters in Gotham prompts other vigilantes to step up, with Harley teaming up with them to stop the big bad’s plans.

Of course, considering this is the follow-up to Suicide Squad, watching this film should be a no-brainer. And yet, it can easily be considered as a standalone feature considering it wipes the slate clean. Birds of Prey places Harley front and center, and she shines in her role as the anti-hero partnered with solid supporting characters.

Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014)

The Guadians in their yellow prison outfits in Guardians of the Galaxy

The hunt for a mysteriously powerful orb prompts a massive search across a distant galaxy, where warlords and thieves fight for its possession. At the center of all this forms a gang of misfits, who band together to resolve to save the galaxy before it can be destroyed.

If Suicide Squad had a perfected version, it would pretty much be how Guardians of the Galaxy turned out. The film brings in a genuine feel, filled with heart, emotions, comedy, and superhero action. The constant clashes in personality of these characters never feels excessive, and it’s always fun to watch them hazing one another. At its core, though, the movie is a solid story about finding family in the strangest of ways.
