The first Stargirl trailer is released during the Crisis on Infinite Earths aftershow on The CW, showcasing Brec Bassinger in the lead role and offering a glimpse of the Cosmic Staff in action. Stargirl, also known by Courtney Whitmore, has been a somewhat relatively recent addition to the world of comics. The character debuted in July 1999, created by Geoff Johns, and influenced by his late sister of the same name. Stargirl is no stranger to live-action depictions, having appeared in Smallville and Legends of Tomorrow. She will also reportedly be portrayed in the upcoming Black Adam movie. But it’s the first time the hero will have a series of her own.

The trailer is different than the Stargirl teaser that had been released, then deleted, on Saturday. A 30-second spot, the deleted teaser promised a Spring 2020 premiere for Stargirl. It also showed the protagonist’s normal life, leaving a shot of Stargirl in costume for the very end. The series will follow Courtney, a high school student who discovers that her stepfather once served as a sidekick for the superhero Starman. Airing on both The CW and the DC Universe streaming service, Stargirl will help to usher in a new era of DC TV as it will feature members of the Justice Society of America and the Injustice Society.

The full Stargirl trailer offers a fuller gaze into what shape the show’s narrative will take. It starts with a scene of Courtney’s stepdad (played by Luke Wilson) as he comes to the aid of Starman (Joel McHale). From there, it reveals how Courtney is struggling to adapt to all the changes in her life, including moving to a new house and having a new parent. The fact that the Cosmic Staff seems to take a liking to Courtney is definitely one of the bright spots for the teenager. Check out the full trailer below.

Stargirl utilizes a template that has worked incredibly well for some of the most enduring pop culture properties of all time. As pointed out by Johns, who is also the showrunner for the television adaptation in addition to creating the comic book character, the upcoming series is a cross between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Spider-Man in how it focuses on a high schooler who has to balance homework with life-altering abilities. Based on the trailer, Courtney is accepting her fate a lot better than Buffy Summers and Peter Parker did initially. Although the enthusiasm probably won’t last.

Moving forward, with Arrow coming to end, as well as The Flash and Supergirl taking over the mantle of long-running programs, Stargirl is one of the reasons that the future of DC’s complete TV universe may well prove to be durable. Fans may not have to wait until next spring to see the character. Before the Brec Bassinger project launches, reports indicated the character will somehow factor into the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event.
