Producer Marc Guggenheim shares higher ups at DC considering spoiling Ezra Miller's DCEU The Flash cameo in Crisis on Infinite Earths, before ultimately deciding against it. The CW's crossover event began in December 2019 before concluding in January 2020. Though the network has staged crossovers many times before, Crisis on Infinite Earths had massive implications for the Arrowverse. For one, Arrow hero Oliver Queen/Green Arrow sacrificed himself to save the multiverse. But even more importantly, Crisis revealed numerous DC properties exist in the same universe, including the DCEU.

Fans were shocked to see Miller, who plays The Flash in the DCEU, pop up for a brief moment during Crisis on Infinite Earths. In a short scene taking place in the speed force, he met The Flash TV show's Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). It was arguably the event's most surprising moment, despite dozens of other cameos. Fans have longed believed the Arrowverse would never be able to reference the DCEU, as it would be considered off-limits by Warner Bros. Luckily, the multiverse made it possible for multiple versions of characters to exist in one crossover, as John Wesley Shipp's Flash from Earth-90 appeared as well.

Now, Arrowverse producer Marc Guggenheim has revealed DC made the decision about whether to tease Miller's cameo ahead of time. Speaking with Fake Nerd Podcast, Guggenheim explained:

There was a lot of back and forth about whether or not we were going to keep it a secret. I was amazed that it was able to surprise people because we live in a world where it’s really really really hard - there’s cameras everywhere and it’s really hard to genuinely surprise the audience. No one knew - I mean, nobody knew. In large part it was because once the decision - and again way above my head - was made to keep it a secret everyone understood the importance of keeping it a secret.

The producer then elaborated on why it was so important to keep Miller's appearance a surprise once the decision was made, saying, "This is involving the upper echelon of Warner Bros. we can’t let this… If the powers that be have decided that this is to be a surprise then we have got to move heaven and earth to make sure it’s a surprise."

So far, fans have seen Miller's Flash on the big screen briefly in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and for a more substantial appearance in 2017's Justice League. He also showed up for a cameo in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. Miller will also star in a The Flash standalone movie in 2022, which was supposed to begin pre-production next month. However, the coronavirus continues to affect the entertainment industry, meaning there will likely be a delay. The Flash film has grown accustomed to these, with Miller's role in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them films making scheduling difficult.

Miller's cameo in Crisis on Infinite Earths was a surprising treat for fans, and it seems like DC made the right call in keeping it a secret. It's also impressive they were able to do so, considering even Tom Ellis' appearance as Lucifer was accidentally spoiled ahead of time. Other DC cameos were purposely revealed as a way of getting fans excited about the crossover. All told, Miller's The Flash cameo made for one of the most exciting moments in Crisis on Infinite Earths, partly because of how shocking it was.
