Warning: spoilers ahead for Dark Crisis: The Dark Army #1!DC has turned Captain Carrot, its cutest Superman variant, into pure nightmare fuel. Carrot is the greatest champion of Earth-26 and a member of the Justice League Incarnate. But as seen in Dark Crisis: The Dark Army #1, he has come under the influence of the Great Darkness. The Darkness has warped Captain Carrot, turning the hero into a rabid and bloodthirsty creature. The issue is on sale now in print and digital.

Hailing from the “funny animal”-themed Earth-26 in DC’s multiverse, Captain Carrot is the leader of the Zoo Crew, his world’s premiere superhero team. In addition to his duties with the Zoo Crew, Carrot is also a member of the Justice League Incarnate, the multiversal Justice League. Fighting alongside Calvin Ellis (the Super President of Earth-23), Mary Marvel and Doctor Multiverse, Carrot helps keep both his Earth and the multiverse safe from all threats. However, the League Incarnate may have finally met their match in the Great Darkness. The Darkness, the primordial evil resting outside the Omniverse, has been awakened and corrupted by Pariah; the two have set out to “restore” the original multiverse. To help him in his goals, Pariah has assembled a “Dark Army,” consisting of heroes and villains the two have corrupted. Not only have they assimilated a majority of Earth’s villains into the Army, but heroes as well–including Captain Carrot and the Justice League Incarnate.

Damian Wayne has assembled a rag-tag group of heroes, including Doctor Light, Power Girl and Sideways, for a secret mission, one that takes them to the Bleed and the Hall of Heroes–the headquarters of the Justice League Incarnate. The base is in ruins, with signs of a fight. As the heroes continue to investigate, they are attacked by the Darkness-possessed Justice League Incarnate–including Captain Carrot. Under the influence of the Darkness, Carrot has become a fierce, rabid, sharp-toothed creature. He grabs Sideways and tries to bite his head off, but the hero was too tough for Carrot, and managed to escape. Thanks to a super-charged Doctor Light, Damian and his team were able to liberate Carrot and the rest of the League Incarnate from the Darkness’ influence. The book is written by Mark Waid, Delilah S. Dawson and Dennis Culver, illustrated by Freddie E. Williams and Jack Herbert, colored by Adriano Lucas and lettered by Troy Peteri.

Captain Carrot's Corruption is Heartbreaking

Captain Carrot Sideways Great Darkness

Although the corruption that overtook Carrot was eventually purged, and he returned to his normal self, the sight of him turned into a vicious killing machine was unsettling. Carrot is the greatest hero of not only his Earth, but the entire multiverse as well; many Justice Incarnate stories portray him as the heart and soul of the team, consoling his teammates and serving as a shoulder to cry on. Seeing Captain Carrot trying to eat one of his fellow heroes is the stuff of nightmares. Captain Carrot’s corruption at the hands of Pariah is heartbreaking, but fortunately one that was short-lived.

The fight against Pariah and his Dark Army has taken its toll on the DC Universe, but now that Captain Carrot and the rest of the Justice League Incarnate are free, the scales may now tip in favor of the good guys; Captain Carrot is a powerhouse on any Earth, and now he has a score to settle with Pariah, as he turned this cute Superman variant into a nightmarish killing machine.
