Warning! Spoilers for Wonder Woman #772 below.

Thor is returning to the DC Universe. The Asgardian God of Thunder, who's most famously known in the pop culture stratosphere as an Avenger in the Marvel Comics Universe, will be teaming up with Wonder Woman against her darkest self in an upcoming issue of her ongoing series. Thor has occasionally been featured in DC Comics stories, but it appears he'll be getting a bigger role than ever in this next chapter.

Of course, Thor is based on the diety from Norse Mythology of the same name. The legend was adapted by Marvel Comics in Journey into Mystery #83 by Jack Kirby, Larry Lieber, and Stan Lee, as the Mjolnir-wielding God would (and still does) play an instrumental role in his own solo stories and team-ups with the Avengers. However, DC Comics actually introduced a comic book version of Thor before he appeared with Marvel in 1962. In Tales of the Unexpected #16 (1957), Thor (who appeared quite differently) starred in the story "The Magic Hammer," which was also written by Kirby. Even before that, Thor appeared in Whiz Comics #50 (1944) from Fawcett Comics, the publisher that created Captain Marvel.

Versions of Thor from different Earth's have appeared in the DC Universe over the decades. Most recently, Thor played a small part in 2017's The Odyssey of the Amazon. However, with the DC Universe about to change again in the upcoming Infinite Frontier era, it's possible this is a new version of Thor altogether - and not the same one from Prime Earth. In Wonder Woman #772 by Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, and Travis Moore, Diana (who has memory issues) will be pulled into the Norse afterlife in Valhalla. The issue's solicited teases that she will outsmart Asgardian beasts, but come face-to-face with the darkest version of herself. Who's helping her navigate through this new world? Thor, the God of Thunder. Check out the solicit for the issue below - which also includes information on the comic's backup story.

  • Wonder Woman may have outsmarted the beasts of Asgard for now, but nothing has prepared her for what’s to come. Diana’s darkest self has emerged as a new opponent, and she’ll need help from an unexpected ally whose connection to thunder has inspired many a tale: Thor! Can this god-and-demi-goddess duo find out what has disturbed the balance of things? Or are they doomed to leave everything, including their lives, on the battlefield? Find out as this Norse narrative continues! And in the backup story taking place during the younger days of our hero, Diana must dive deep into the depths of Themyscira’s oceans to learn more about the mysterious manuscripts leftto her. Little does she know, what lies beneath has many teeth and is dying to meet her. Beware the mighty megalodons and their appetites!

The God and Goddess will quest to find out what's causing chaos in the realm, while further pushing Wonder Woman into a Norse world. Diana likely wants answers to what happened to her and why she's in Asgard. Thor could provide those answers, but at the very least, he'll help Wonder Woman navigate and battle the unknown forces that are after her. DC Comics version of Thor will appear in Wonder Woman #772, which is in stores on May 11, 2021.
