Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Batman vs Robin #3While Batman knew Alfred Pennyworth's resurrection was too good to be true in Batman vs Robin, the latest issue still provides an opportunity for DC to fix a major mistake regarding Pennyworth's murder in 2016's City of Bane. Despite this new version of Alfred being used to pull the Dark Knight's focus from his corrupted son Robin, the true spirit of Alfred eventually came to the surface in this new issue.

Previously in DC's Batman vs Robin, Bruce Wayne was shocked to see Alfred alive and well standing at the doorstep of Wayne Manor. Meanwhile, Damian Wayne has been corrupted by the Devil Nezha whom Robin inadvertently unleashed who's also in league with Damian's great-grandmother Mother Soul. Now, Robin has become the primary agent in Nezha's war against magic in the DC Universe, incapacitating even the strongest magical heroes such as the Justice League Dark.

While Alfred joined Batman on the run in previous issues, it's confirmed in the new Batman vs Robin #3 from Mark Waid, Mahmud Asrar, and Scott Godlewski that the Dark Knight never took Pennyworth's return at face value. Confirming that Alfred was nothing more than a puppet of Nezha's using subtle tests, Batman uses this fake Pennyworth as a human shield while attacked by a corrupted Nightwing wielding the Sword of Sin. However, the issue surprisingly reveals that Alfred's true spirit was used by Nezha to create this facsimile of Batman's surrogate father. As such, Batman finally gets to speak with the real Alfred and hear his last words, something he was denied in City of Bane after being incapacitated on the other side of the world.

Alfred Finally Gets To Share A Final Moment With Batman

Alfred's Finally Gets Last Words With Batman

Before telling Batman that his parents send their love, Alfred demands that Bruce stop blaming himself for his death as there was nothing he could have done to prevent it. Unable to find peace until Batman lets go of his "unnecessary remorse and unearned burden", Batman seemingly agrees to move forward without carrying as much needless guilt as he had been these last few years. In order to successfully save Damian from Nezha, Alfred knows that Batman will have to heal the wound the Devil attempted to exploit by bringing him back.

At any rate, Batman getting to have a final moment with Alfred is huge as it allows him to reconcile his feelings of guilt and loss for not being there when Bane killed him. Likewise, Alfred's passing is something Batman should have always been present for. As such, this new moment certainly makes up for what many fans saw as a mistake in City of Bane's storyline. Batman vs Robin #3 is on sale now from DC Comics.
