Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek shares a funny story about his daughter's reaction to the show's most iconic meme. The teen drama, which featured Van Der Beek in the title role, has experienced a second life thanks to its availability on streaming. In recent years, new generations of fans have invested in the complicated friendships between Dawson, Joey (Katie Holmes), Pacey (Joshua Jackson), and Jen (Michelle Williams). But along with that resurgent popularity, some of the show's scenes have been reexamined in a decidedly different light.

Although it's always had something of an legendary status, even being described as one of the top-tier memes in the history of pop culture, the scene in the Dawson's Creek season 3 finale in which Van Der Beek's protagonist absolutely breaks down crying in front of Joey continues to find new admirers. The cast have said they weren't even really aware of how ubiquitous Dawson's tears had become until a few years ago. And, in new comments to People, Van Der Beek reveals that his 12-year-old daughter has found a hilarious way to utilize one of her father's memorable on-screen moments against him:

For some online learning, we got them iPads and they immediately discovered memes. So it started, my eldest sent me a meme of myself. She immediately hit me with the cry face. I thought, ‘That’s aggressive.’

Will A Dawson’s Creek Reboot Happen?

For those hoping that Holmes and Van Der Beek might recreate their famous Dawson and Joey confrontation, that doesn't sound too likely. Over the past few years, the cast have said fairly consistently that they don't see the utility in revisiting their old roles. Jackson, for example, has joked that he's too old for a Dawson's Creek revival. But beyond the humor of it, the remarks seem to be getting at the fact that that series was made during a specific timeframe and spoke to a prevailing 1990s culture and conversation that wouldn't be fruitful to resurrect.

Though it was influential and helped to kickstart the careers of the core four cast members, in addition to series creator Kevin Williamson, there is nothing about Dawson's Creek that lends itself to a reboot. It was a teen drama, and many that followed have since borrowed or otherwise tweaked some of its hallmarks. It is more memorable now for the nostalgia it evokes, which is something that wouldn't be captured by a reboot in the same.

Still, for some audiences, there is an argument that Dawson's Creek should come back to address some missteps of the original series. The good news is, in any case, the fandom for the show is alive and well. There's an upcoming Blu-ray release, plus the episodes are available to stream with Paula Cole's seminal theme song. Fans can create new memes or inject life into old ones whenever they like.
