It's the outfit that inadvertently kicked off a Halloween fashion trend, so here's where you can find your very own David S Pumpkins costume. It's extremely unlikely anybody involved with the "Haunted Elevator (ft. David S. Pumpkins)" sketch knew how big it would blow up. The skit involves a couple, played by Beck Bennett and Kate McKinnon (Ghostbusters 2016), who ride a Halloween elevator attraction. The doors open to reveal a number of spooky characters and Tom Hanks pumpkin-suited character David S. Pumpkins. How or why this character is supposed to be terrifying is part of the joke, though he eventually succeeds terrifying the couple in the final moments.

Tom Hanks was the guest host of Saturday Night Live the week this sketch was put together, and he was so uncertain of it he suggested the team pass it to Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Ragnarok) instead, who was due to host the following episode. Hanks was eventually convinced to perform the skit which instantly went viral. The combination of Hanks' performance, his dancing skeleton sidekicks, and the couple's increasing distress over the character's nature made it a surprise comic gem.

The appeal of the character comes down almost entirely to Hanks' commitment to the sketch, from the strange voice to his finger guns. Of course, the Davis S Pumpkins costume is what completes the picture, which is a garish, pumpkin-patterned nightmare. The character's co-creator Mikey Day claims Pumpkins' iconic suit was found during a quick Google search and after "Haunted Elevator" went viral in 2016, online retailers quickly sold out of the costume.

Now the fever surrounding the sketch has cooled down it's a little easier to track down the costume. It's available at a number of online retailers, which includes the Fun World SNL David S. Pumpkins costume at Amazon.com. This comes with the jacket, pants, and tie, though the black wig with a streak of white hair is sold separately.

Even with a David S. Pumpkins costume for Halloween, it's up to the wearer to sell that famous Tom Hanks energy. While the character later returned for The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special, which was an animated short, there don't appear to be any plans to revive him in the near future. Given the mixed reaction to the special itself this might be for the best, since it would be tough to recapture the odd magic of the original sketch.
